Dec 5, 2014 - Graupel, which is a kind of hybrid frozen precipitation, is sometimes referred to as “snow pellets.” The National Weather Service defines graupel as small pellets of ice created when super-cooled water droplets coat, or rime, a snowflake.

Anyone experience graupel?

Yes, in Ireland we had a cold spell in December 2010 in which we had frequent lake-effect snow showers generated over the Irish Sea. As these showers arrived the first part was usually graupel, then followed by snow in the bulk of the shower. Strong updrafts caused the snow to be fling back up into the supercooled region of the cloud.

Graupel is common in the Pacific Northwest of the United States too.  It is just a heavily rimed snowflake.  Looks like small hail, but squishy.
