Extreme East Pacific Hurricane Patricia Threatens SW Mexico

Patricia is a pretty impressive storm. Sustained winds 185 mph, gusts over 200 mph. I've got to think this could be one of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit North America if it maintains this intensity. I wonder if the intensity of Patricia is at all related to the El Nino ?

You can think of it as a 20 mile wide EF3 tornado ringed by 30 more miles of EF2.

NHC

The purpose of this special advisory is to update for a significant

increase in the intensity of the hurricane. Reports from the Air

Force Hurricane Hunters indicate that Patricia has intensified at an

incredible rate since yesterday. The plane measured peak 700-mb

flight level winds of 179 kt in the northeastern eyewall, and this

may be an unprecedented value for a tropical cyclone. Using the 90

percent adjustment value to convert this to a surface wind speed

yields an intensity estimate of 160 kt, which is tied with eastern

north Pacific Hurricane Linda of 1997 for the strongest on record.

A dropsonde released into the eye measured a sea-level pressure of

894 mb with 25 kt of wind. Adjusting this pressure for the surface

winds (i.e. the drop did not land into the actual center of the eye)

gives an estimated minimum central pressure of 892 mb, which breaks

the record for the lowest pressure of an east Pacific hurricane.

Some fluctuations in intensity are likely today due to eyewall

replacements, but Patricia should maintain category 5 status through

landfall this afternoon or evening.

Wow! 25.99/ 880 MB , 200 MPH sustained winds

Patricia is a MONSTER!

Pretty silly, and even sillier is they increase it to friggen 205 RIGHT BEFORE LANDFALL :o ....... anyone within say 10-15 miles of the eye might be in trouble even in well built structures....this is also the faster I have ever seen a storm ramp down 205-70 in 12 hrs. the mts there at gonna shred this thing but there will be places a few miles inland at 1000 ft and the winds there will be possibly some of the highest to ever effect the ground outside of a high end tornado.

If this storm was a tornado it would be pushing an EF-5! Can't believe how strong it is.

It's pretty amazing to see.  I have saved off several satellite images for posterity!

Yeah it would. I'm not sure if it will be fully tropical though.

Yeah, I don't think it will get back there...but you never know.

Yeah the tropics can do anything account to Patricia. Joe Bastardi thinks the ghost of Patricia will produce TS conditions and a tornado outbreak next week along with flooding.

Why is all the Hurricane Patricia talk in the Banter thread? Nobody's ever going to find it if they were looking back...

there's an Atlantic hurricane discussion thread but not one for the Pacific :( I would say a new thread should be started for Patricia but since she's about to make landfall it may be too late for that.

Video from the hurricane hunters cockpit yesterday as they flew through the eyewall and then back into it.  These guys are all business.  Very little chatter in the cockpit.  What a thrill ride, though.  The sounds are so different when they break into the eye and vision is restored.  I've never seen this type of video before.
