tdp146
34 was the low here. All the plants made it no issue. I guess I've got the local market cornered on fresh produce?

Isotherm
True, although the definition is too simplistic and rigid in my opinion, a light frost in mid October doesn't spell the end of all plant growth until March. Technically those low temperatures [30-31F] implicate a light freeze. A light frost usually implies temperatures in the middle 30s. However, I agree that some life can still survive post a light freeze. Not the case for areas that received a moderate, to especially hard freeze with temperatures in the middle 20s or colder. ag3
31 currently, the low was 30. Growing season continues, nothing's dead. You had a freeze. Growing season is over.

Morris
Just missed the 1976 low by 1 degree like NYC. 10/19 30 in 1976 30 in 1948 31 in 2015 31 in 1974+ How did all area stations miraculously have the same 30 degree low in 1976?
Brian5671
26 here last night after hitting 29 the night before, so everything is toast. Bye bye bugs too.

Cfa
You had a freeze. Growing season is over. I doubt it, not while our average temperatures remain conducive to plant growth. But we shall see.

A light freeze might be able to get away with it once, if you protected them well. Some say tomatoes can survive a light freeze as long as there was no frost too. nzucker
Growing season ended last night in southern Westchester. HPN got down to 27F. I had ice on my car windshield in Dobbs Ferry, and the banks of the Saw Mill River were heavily frosted from Exit 9 north. Extensive damage is evident on sensitive plants, like my eggplants and basil.

I agree that it was light freeze, but I meant there was a light frost on some cold surfaces. The growing season is likely over for areas that dipped a bit into the 20's, that's enough to kill sensitive vegetation outright. Lower 30's, not so much imo, not in mid October anyway. How did all area stations miraculously have the same 30 degree low in 1976? I thought Islip only went as far back as 1984.
nzucker
Amazing thing was we hit 32F before 11pm last night in Dobbs Ferry...that's a lot of hours below freezing. Bottoming out in the upper 20s after low 30s the previous night did a number on vegetation.

I guess we shall see. winds went calm just at the last minute and I assume we got down to like 30. ag3
34 isn't even freezing. Growing season isn't over for you guys. Never said it was. But I had widespread ice/frost on all cars and other cold surfaces this morning. Frost does not need 32 degrees or lower to form.
