Since December looks likely to be warmer than average, I was wondering how unusual it would be to have November and December both be warmer and snowier than average.  For Chicago, it's happened 4 times, though a few of the months below were essentially near average in temps or snow.

1907:

Nov:  +0.7F, +1.8"

Dec:  +5.1F, +4.6"

1956:

Nov:  +0.3F, +0.3"

Dec:  +5.1F, +0.3"

1974:

Nov:  +0.6F, +3.9"

Dec:  +3.4F, +8.1"

1975:

Nov:  +6.8F, +9.6"

Dec:  +3.8F, +3.5"

Clouds, clouds go away. It seems when it is relatively mild out it has a tendency to be cloudy in the winter.

Crazy Canadian geese were flying every which way this morning, including north! Seeing quite a bit of wildlife activity in general since all the snow melted off.

These last couple years are pretty much rewriting climo. Milwaukee and Minneapolis with less snow than Chicago and Detroit. Luckliy it's only a sample size of a couple years, but the law of averages is due to reverse for the pairs of cities.

Milwaukee only averages a bit more than 4" more snow annually than Detroit, and Minneapolis about a foot. But climo definitely being rewritten locally, it has NOT been normal lately. Have had no desire to go up north the last few years in winter, usually Im like a fiend about that lol.

Just realized that the November 11th Geneseo tornado last month passed a few hundred yards behind the barn in my avatar pic.  Took that pic just north of the junction of route 92 and route 1 last January.  Was looking northwest at the barn in the avatar pic.  The tornado would have passed right behind there before it lifted.  Luckily it's all open field west of this.  Pretty cool.

sorry for the cryptic question, but does anyone recall if there was a nino winter, (circa late 80's), which featured lake cutter after lake cutter throughout most of the winter?

1987-1988 (with the infamous December 15th, 1987 Blizzard) was a neutral ENSO, but it featured cutter after cutter as you described.

And it also had an Siberian air outbreak at the beginning of January.

The only El Nino in the late 1980s was 1986-1987. Aside from a big east coast snowstorm and subsequent Siberian air outbreak in late January 1987, that winter was mostly "meh" for everyone.

That barn was lucky! Glad it survived, because it made for a great  winter picture!

Thank you sir.

Here's a larger version.  The nader would have passed somewhere in the open field on the left side of the pic.

EDIT:  The tree near the no trespassing sign was snapped off just above the sign in that storm.  I think the tree was dead though.

Locally, there were some decent snowstorms in January and March 1987, but nothing that really stood out. In fact DTW had an impressive 24" in January 1987. One of those milder but snowier than normal winters.

ok thanks.  One of the reasons I recall that winter was because Larry Cosgrove was the OCM on the ABC affiliate and EVERY one of those cutters he forecasted to come further east and bring us snow.   Never happened...over and over again.   Miserably rainy and cold.

Pretty quiet in the snow department until we get closer to Christmas from the looks of things.  If we can make it the rest of the month without snow this would be the 2nd December in a row with <1" of snow.  Last Dec we only had a trace in Dec.  Have had 0.5" so far this month.  Gonna come down to the last 10 days of the month to determine if this will be another throw away month like last Dec.

Still can't complain though given the crappy El Nino this year, and also the fact that we got buried pretty nicely by that mid November system.

Pattern isn't bothering me yet. Been kind of nice getting some things done outside still. If it doesn't turn wintry around the 20th and if wintry weather is absent in the short term by then, then I'll have a few words to say. lol

Thank goodness there was a little snow this month, and a lot of snow last month!
