tamarack
Awesome. Love that first shot...from a golfers persepctive, haha. On holes like that I always want to just get a bucket of balls and sit there for an hour dropping shots onto that green (hopefully). As for foliage, that's gotta be at least a week behind for the western Maine mountains. That looks like it *might* be 50% or so at this point. Once I get back to Stowe on Friday I'll give an update (driving from Albany Airport to Stowe)...but from shots I've seen from co-workers at the mountain, it looks about the same as that at Sunday River. Maybe 50%. Last year from what I see in my photo archive we were already dealing with a lot of leaf drop at this point. For the aerial photos we use in forest management, we're looking to have them flown at/near peak color. By this time last year we'd closed the project in the western mountains due to excessive leaf drop. Still open this year, though it's probably near peak there and the next good wind event will cause a leaf blizzard.
eyewall
I plan on hiking Spruce Mountain in Plainfield tomorrow morning. I am hoping there is something worth seeing in that area.
powderfreak
In jest for the Tolland fall foliage expert. Haha I thought it sounded sarcastic but the rest of your report was very objective so I wasn't sure.

Sugarloaf1989
Very poor year for foliage with a record warm September and dry late summer. Yes but it seems to be coming around. Route 9/71 had the nicest foliage color I have seen the last two years. In 2013 and 2014 the foliage was gone by now. Killington had the greenest foliage color I have ever seen in early October in 25+ years of foliage viewing in that area of Vermont, but the foliage looked healthy with very little leaf drop. I plan on being somewhere in Central/Northern Vermont on Sunday, so I am hoping for good foliage color.
Sugarloaf1989
Hmm .I was thinking South or Central VT on Sunday perhaps route 100 to route 30 cutting over the spine of the greens and back down route 7. Only day I have available this month for a foliage drive is Sunday. If I do end up going, hopefully it's a decent show, it seems like mixed reviews thus far. Route 100 was 90% green from past Ludlow to Killington last Saturday, very unusual for Early October. From Route 4/100 North there where pockets of 50% color to Mad River Glen. I would skip Route 30 as it follows the West River, is very warm and has a lot of Oak Tree's which where 100% green last weekend. I would suggest taking Route 9 to Route 100 north to Okemo and Route 103 south to I-91 and home, IMHO.

Four more days for improvement but I get the feeling it won't be a banner year overall. Still have to convince the wife on even going.

tamarack
Very poor year for foliage with a record warm September and dry late summer. NYC's warmest September on record, topping 1961 by 0.9F. No precip records, but not much more than half their average Aug/Sept, with a bunch of that coming on 9/30 when it was too late to affect color. We're still quite green down here, so I'm hoping the late rains have a shot at helping the trees that change a bit later. Some pretty maples around Westchester, but still only about 10% changed. Wide swaths of forest, such as the 150-acre Juhring Estate behind our house, remain completely green.
Juliancolton
Very poor year for foliage with a record warm September and dry late summer. Yeah, it's pretty abysmal around here... even the roadside specimens that reliably yield obscene shades of red are looking rather beige this season. Damage In Tolland
One of the worst seasons in SNE since I moved here in 78. Other than splotchy brighter sugar maples..most are like dried blood color or ugly yellow/browns

I didn't know NYC had warmest September...anyone know what other spots did? BTV set theirs by a full 2.0F. Going to be hard to top that in the future. Sugarloaf1989
The fall foliage color change here in Northern/Central Connecticut is maybe 5% and it's way too early too call it good or bad. This is the latest color change I have seen in viewing foliage for 25+ years. In Vermont, Route 9/71 had the brightest color I have seen for the last few years, so it's all relative. I'd give it another week in Vermont before calling it good or bad.

Yeah and really that's not the hills over there in Vernon. I grew up not even 5 minutes from there. Used to skate and swim there. But there is a big difference when you get into the valley. You had frost this morning and my low was 48.2 lol Crazy

powderfreak
Getting back into NVT tomorrow, excited to see what foliage looks like. I've been seeing some good stuff on social media. This was yesterday on RT 108 in Smugglers Notch between Stowe and Jeffersonville. It looks like it's been through FB's photo processor so probably over saturated. But still looks like the color is there. Jeffersonville, VT FB page:

Some folks are trashing things too early the same way they jump to conclusions when winter starts slow. It's not a top year but calling it the worst since 78 is ludicrous. eyewall
I was in the notch yesterday and yes that was through some saturation boosting for sure. Here are a few I took there and near route 15 and 16 (in the vicinity of Hill Farmstead). I did not boost the color in these although slight dehazing may have influence saturation slightly. Either way I didn't go overboard on enhancement: Near the Cabot Cheese outlet in Waterbury on route 100 (note the frost in the shade) One of the more muted areas on 15 I believe Near Hill Farmstead in Greensboro, VT Caught amazing light in Smuggler's Notch! Color is nearing peak in the foothills and includes some decent reds to go with the yellow/orange. (The white ash purple was way below average.) Still it is worlds better than 2005, the year without red, when the lousy color was about at the halfway point (and later than this year) when a windy 6" rainstorm blew off about 75% of the leaves.
