Sophisticated Skeptic
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/space/11783399/Amazing-picture-of-Earth-beamed-back-from-new-weather-satellite.html looks like the UK has an awesome new satellite functional. Anybody know which computer their referring to for models...or something new ? Guessing it'll only do satellite stuff for the UK. But the model aspect i'm interested in. Weather forecasts are expected to become more accurate by the end of the year after the Met Office switches on its new £97 million supercomputer. The Met Office said that in September it will be able to give forecasts six days ahead instead of the current four and calculate temperatures for the next 24 hours with up to 90 per cent accuracy. Currently, it can only do so for 12 hours. Using one of the world’s most powerful computers — paid for by the government — scientists will analyse data once an hour, rather than every six hours, to give the most accurate predictions so far. ohleary
Next gen Meteosat satellite. Wiill eventually be Meteosat-11. "The last satellite of the MSG series, MSG-4, was launched on 15 July 2015. After commissioning, it will become Meteosat-11 and be ‘stored’ until it replaces one of its predecessors. It will then take over services and ensure the smooth transition to Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) in 2019." http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Meteosat_Second_Generation/MSG_overview2
