Things are looking up concerning rainfall as showers and storms are rapidly growing across parts of the area right now. Showers and storms are expected to expand north and east through the afternoon. I know a lot of us would like to see some rain and we have great chances this afternoon and into the day tomorrow. We get a bonus cool off as well. We'll also be on the lookout for some severe storms this afternoon with damaging winds the threat!

OF RANDOLPH...DAVIDSON...WESTERN CHATHAM...STANLY...MOORE AND
MONTGOMERY COUNTIES UNTIL 330 PM EDT...

WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH THESE STORMS.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1622
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0140 PM CDT THU AUG 06 2015

AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS OF NRN/CNTRL GA...WRN/CNTRL SC...AND FAR
SRN NC

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 061840Z - 062045Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...40 PERCENT

SUMMARY...CLUSTERS OF STRONG/MARGINALLY SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD
SLOWLY ORGANIZE THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON...WITH AN INCREASING THREAT
FOR STRONG WIND GUSTS. CONVECTIVE TRENDS ARE BEING MONITORED FOR
POTENTIAL WATCH ISSUANCE.

DISCUSSION...AREAS OF CONVECTION HAVE BEEN RELATIVELY UNORGANIZED SO
FAR THIS AFTERNOON...AS DIURNALLY ENHANCED THUNDERSTORMS HAVE SLOWLY
BLOSSOMED IN MOIST/CONFLUENT SFC FLOW ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE
SOUTHEAST STATES. HOWEVER...AS A RELATIVELY SHARP IMPULSE /EVIDENT
OVER THE TN AND OH VALLEYS IN WV IMAGERY/ PROGRESSES
EWD...LARGE-SCALE ASCENT SHOULD AID THUNDERSTORM ORGANIZATION OVER
PORTIONS OF NRN/CNTRL GA. INDEED...RECENT TRENDS ON THE REGIONAL
WSR-88D MOSAIC SUGGEST SUCH ORGANIZATION MAY BE UNDERWAY. THESE
CELLS SHOULD THEN SPREAD EWD INTO SC BY THE EVENING HOURS.

WHILE MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE MEAGER...A WARM/MOIST ENVIRONMENT
/CHARACTERIZED BY PWATS UPWARDS OF 2 INCHES AND WELL-MIXED LOW
LEVELS/ WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR A GROWING STRONG-WIND
THREAT...PRIMARILY ASSOCIATED WITH WET MICROBURSTS. MOREOVER...AS
HEIGHT FALLS ALOFT OVERTAKE THE REGION...A MODEST INCREASE IN
MID-LEVEL FLOW WILL ENHANCE THE WIND THREAT VIA VERTICAL MOMENTUM
TRANSFER IN DOWNDRAFTS. THE HAIL THREAT IS QUITE MARGINAL
THOUGH...AS FAIRLY MODEST UPDRAFT ACCELERATION AND A MOIST
TROPOSPHERIC COLUMN SHOULD CREATE A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT FOR
LARGE-HAIL GROWTH/MAINTENANCE. NONETHELESS...TRENDS REGARDING
CONVECTIVE ORGANIZATION ARE BEING MONITORED FOR POSSIBLE WATCH
ISSUANCE.

When I look at the Drought Maps, I can't help but notice that the southern US always seems to have more drought areas than the northern US, paritcularly east of the Rockies. Is the south more prone to droughts for some reason ?

In the summer we usually need some kind of mechanism (cold front, sea breeze, tropical storm, etc.) to create rain. The northern areas get more frontal passages which tend to keep them away from prolonged droughts.

I also imagine having a snowpack in the winter keeps droughts at bay in the winter.

Same here! Solid line incoming! Hope they don't get the splitz!

That won't happen until they hit I-26 :)  A little bit longer and I will be basically the only one in the upstate where it hasn't rained at all today.  Can't wait to see how I miss these storms.  Prob any second now I will see an outflow boundary racing out ahead and realize I'm screwed.

Latest from RAH.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
AS OF 330 PM THURSDAY...

STORMS ARE INCREASING IN COVERAGE AND INTENSITY OVER MUCH OF CENTRAL
NC IN AN AREA THAT RECEIVED STRONG HEATING EARLIER TODAY. MID LEVEL
LAPSE RATES REMAIN MEAGER... BUT MLCAPE HAS RISEN TO 1500-2000 J/KG
WITH 8+ C/KM LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND STILL-MARGINAL BUT IMPROVING
EFFECTIVE SHEAR OF 20-25 KTS. GIVEN THE ABOVE-NORMAL PW AND
INCREASING DYNAMIC FORCING FOR ASCENT WITH THE APPROACH OF A POTENT
MID LEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGH FROM THE WEST AND ITS ATTENDANT SURFACE
LOW... SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS STORMS SHOULD PERSIST WITH A THREAT OF
SPORADIC WET MICROBURSTS THROUGH MID EVENING. BEHIND THIS INITIAL
BATCH OF STORMS... ADDITIONAL SHOWERS AND STORMS ASSOCIATED WITH
SUBTLE PERTURBATIONS ROTATING OUT OF THE SHORTWAVE TROUGH BASE AND
FEEDING ON ELEVATED INSTABILITY AND DEEPENING MOISTURE WILL CONTINUE
TO TRACK EAST THEN NE INTO THE AREA WELL INTO TONIGHT... AND SOME OF
THESE TOO COULD BECOME STRONG ESPECIALLY THIS EVENING... UNTIL THE
LOSS OF HEATING AND COMPETING OUTFLOWS START TO CURB STORM DEPTH AND
STRENGTH... EVENTUALLY DEVOLVING INTO AREAS OF SHOWERS AND JUST A
FEW STORMS OVERNIGHT. ALL TOLD... WILL STICK WITH HIGH-END LIKELY
POPS OVER THE ENTIRE CWA THROUGH MUCH OF THE EVENING... TRENDING
DOWN TO HIGH CHANCE OR LOW LIKELY POPS OVERNIGHT AS THE SURFACE LOW
OVER WRN KY TRANSLATES INTO THE AREA WITH CONTINUED FALLING HEIGHTS
ALOFT. LOWS FROM 67 TO 75 NORTH TO SOUTH. EXPECT AREAS OF FOG AND
LOW CLOUDS TO DEVELOP LATE TONIGHT. -GIH
