Sebago lake is nice and actually not that far from Portland ME...but not sure that would be big enough for their criteria. It's a pretty big lake, but not like Champlain.

I'd pick Sebago if I was going by their criteria assuming it is large enough for them.

Some of those surrounding towns have to be affordable, though the Portland side of the lake might be a little pricey.

They are all a hell of  lot cheaper than Burlington at quick glance.

Not bad:

OK, so my wife and I are beginning the process of looking for a retirement location, here are the key criteria:

  • Must be a good deal cheaper than Fairfield County.
  • The wife wants to be near a big body of water...Lake Champlain at a minimum.  We just visited Burlington...nice city but not so cheap.
  • We both like cold, dislike heat.
  • Must have snow...we like Mystic CT, but it sucks for snow.
  • Door County WI?  Too far from the kids

Any suggestions?

Cape Cod? Not tons of snow but really great storms. Certainly better than Mystic/Stonington (though I'd love to live in Stonington or Old Saybrook/Old Lyme one day)

Get on the northern side of the lake and you might even be able to get yourself into the Dendrite deformation band.

The Burlington housing market is insane.  Lake Champlain water-front property anywhere near BTV is going to be $1 million or higher.  The New York side of the lake is much cheaper, but who wants to be over there?  lol.  You have Plattsburgh, NY but not much else and its a pain to get to the VT side once the ferries stop.  The Vermont side of the Lake is where you'd want to be if you want quick access (under 1 hour) to world-class outdoor recreation in the mountains or access to the major ski resorts.

Frye Island on Sebago Lake looks awesome, haha.  Is that a Ferry that goes to that?  Surprising amount of roads on that Frye Island.

I'd personally try to go a bit further north to avoid coastal plain contamination in borderline snow events, but if comparing the winter to southern CT, it's not going to matter....winter will be a heck of a lot more satisfying even on the Maine coastal plain than at Mystic, CT.

Near normal and dry

I'd consider that dead normal for temps and precip.  If those temps are normal, the precip isn't any different.  I wouldn't even call it a dry summer...ORH had 103% of normal summer precip, while BDL had 95% of normal.  For the two interior sites, that's pretty much dead on normal precipitation.

I actually didn't realize how warm August was across parts of NNE.

BTV was +3.5 from normal for the month, MVL was +4.3, and even CAR was +4.6.

But then there are also a bunch of stations (like most of the GYX CWA) that were only +1.5 to +2.5.

I didn't either.  Seemed like a pretty average August here.  Never even hit 90 which is always a little sad.

For anyone who doesn't browse the sports section often, every year we hold an NFL pick em contest.  This year we are introducing a pay league with a chance to win money!  The buy in fee is $20.  If you're interested you can read all the details here

anyone want to muse about what they think might happen over the winter in the Durango, CO area? I've been passively looking for jobs out there...I have two friends in CO, and with my parents moving to Plymouth, MA sometime around Nov-Dec, there really is no reason for me to stay in MA...

My wife went to school there for a semester in the early 90s

Seems like a neat place
