The Dog Days of Summer: August 2015 Discussion

july was way above normal for me

What station do you utilize for your backyard? Given your location, I'd imagine either Trenton or New Brunswick. Trenton was +0.8 for July, and New Brunswick +1.1. Above normal, but I certainly wouldn't describe it as way above normal.

This summer has been more of a marathon than a sprint as evident by the lack of 95(+) days and the borderline 90 degree  days in the cooler/more rural spots.  Its also been fueled by warmer lows especially in the cities. For the metropolis from CNJ- NYC as a whole this will likely be a warmer summer than 2013 and the  May - Sep period  will be as warm as 2011, 2012.  2010 still standing alone for sure.

24 90+ days here (closer to New Brunswick) but many were 90 and other areas at 88, 89.

Coastal EC very warm this August from GA - SC, NC etc.  I read somewhere in the other forum that Charlotte and Charleston are having a top 5 hottest (max temp) mean.    Aside from the first 12 days of June its been 85-90% above normal.

12z ECM came in much hotter for the 8/30 - 9/2 period 850s  16 - 18C (+).

Yeah Tony, I think the last day of August into the first few days of September could be very hot, with a significant heat wave. Would be a nice way to kick off Labor Day week.

Locally, 2013 will likely edge out this summer in terms of temp departures. For 2013, my JJA departure was +0.9 (+1.2 June; +3.4 July; -1.8 August). This summer so far is +0.5 (-0.2 June; +0.3 July; +1.5 Aug).

And I agree on the SE US. A very hot summer for them. Raleigh's at 46 90F days, which I believe is above normal by 8-10.

Been fun to track and we have to watch for a low to undercut the ridge off the Carfolinas that could push some onshore flow. Anyway just something (caveat) for the strong heat.  But full steam ahead and bucking ENSO may not be a bad thing for winter weather enthusiasts.

Rural SI seems to have fairly similar temperatures (at least highs) to rural Monmouth County. 14 days here as well. Don and my numbers generally align quite well, barring gradient situations.

Actually have 15 days here...Yeah Tom my station is pretty rural for SI with woods on three sides of house (don't own that property but have been very lucky over the years that no development has taken place...that wont last forever unfortunately). Like you mentioned, our departures are lower than the urban stations this month... 85 today BTW.

Yeah but I think a good chink of the island is typically warmer than the park and closer to EWR.  This year the onshore flow might have influnced the borderline days there.  I was living in Annadale between my move from Brooklyn to NJ and ran warmer than the park.

Don thanks for your 90's tally.  Those #'s look between EWR/NYC but the borderline years like 2006 and 2008 closer to EWR.

That's a great set-up for snow retention too. 85 here as well today. I checked out your wunderground station to compare some of our monthly means, and it seems that overall, your highs tend to run a bit cooler than me, while my lows run cooler, which makes sense given the locations.

Generally in summer its a degree or two higher than CP and a couple of degrees lower than EWR at my station...this is for high temps of course. During the colder season its usually a couple degrees colder here across the board. Low temps can be as much as 10+ degrees lower here year round.

Yes I noticed that also, I had some persistent internet problems this past month so there may be some missing or incorrect data on my wunderground page for the past 2 or 3 weeks, but everything is running fine now... also remember that my updates to wunderground occur every 5 - 10 minutes so some of the actual lows and highs could be a bit higher or lower.

The rural versus urban difference is significant this summer, but so is east versus west. The last two months have run slightly below normal at our house in NE PA, whereas NYC is around +3 for the last two months. June was also cooler further west.

In the last few years, the coldest air has been over the Midwest and Great Lakes. In the winter, some of this has filtered east, like 13-14. Summers, however, have been drastically warmer on the East Coast than in the Midwest/Lakes/Plains. This was true in Summer 2014. No difference this year.
