Brian5671
Pretty funny how 3 days at or above 90 is a heat wave. The old days it was 5. Big deal about 3 days of 90 in July...nothing out of the ordinary at all.

Big deal about 3 days of 90 in July...nothing out of the ordinary at all.It almost seems as if the criteria for a heat wave should be different in July and August...the average high here gets to 85-86F this time of year, so a 90-degree high is like +4, hardly anomalous at all. This would be akin to saying that three 32-degree highs (-4) in January constitutes an arctic outbreak. But no one could say that...we need consecutive highs in the 20-25F range even to entertain calling it an arctic outbreak.Anyway, gorgeous weather now with temperatures in the upper 70s, dews in the 50s, and a gentle breeze. Very comfortable for late July.

Anyway, gorgeous weather now with temperatures in the upper 70s, dews in the 50s, and a gentle breeze. Very comfortable for late July. It's not comparable. The amount of energy required to increase the temperature 5 degrees from 85F to 90F is significantly greater than the amount of energy required to increase the temperature 5 degrees from 32F to 37F, for example. It's why July's temperature departures are rarely more than +3, whereas winter months can feature upwards of +10. When the temperature is already averaging fairly high, it's more difficult to increase it significantly. 90F for a prolonged period is definitely impressive at our latitude, even in July. uncle W
the last 30 days have averaged close to 77.0...this is below average for the warmest consecutive 30 days during a summer in NYC...last year was 76.6...normally the warmest period is close to 79.0 on average...This makes the 2000 summer more remarkable...1980 holds the record with a 82.5 mark from July into August...2004 never had any prolonged heat also... 2000.....72.72001.....78.72002.....80.32003.....77.02004.....74.82005.....81.82006.....80.12007.....75.92008.....78.82009.....76.82010.....81.82011.....81.02012.....79.5 2013.....81.7 2014.....76.6.................................................................. Yea east of NYC was 87-90 during the afternoon with a DP just above 70 which was way worse than the 94/59 most others were seeing. I hate the humidity.
