Central PA and the fringes - Summer into Fall

Recommended Posts

Lehigh, Berks, Montgomery, and/or Bucks Counties all might be just about at peak at that time. Nice homes, rolling hills and farmland, and some densely wooded areas all abound throughout that region. Might be worth a shot.

That would definitely work. Any known paths that could lad to good results? Don't know that area at all really.

I'm not super familiar with the area, but one that comes to mind would be the area southwest of Quakertown in the Pennsburg/Green Lane area. Another might be south of Reading heading toward Honey Brook (which might actually be in Chester County, but not sure). You might want to head on over to the Philly forum and ask there. There are a few good posters who live in the area I mentioned who might be able to help you with specifics.

In two weeks my wife and I want to go fall foliage hunting (next weekend we're in Texas where it'll be 90 degrees, ugh).

Any recommendations for pretty scenic drives/overlooks/views in the southern tier of PA or even the northern MD area? By that weekend (Oct 24-25) the Grand Canyon area and even Lock Haven area will likely be past peak. Nothing more than 2 or so hours from Harrisburg really but we're open to any suggestions.

If you don't want to go too far from home, I've always found these areas to be pretty in most any season.  Assuming we haven't had any really hard freezes or windy rain storms I think the foliage should be pretty good over most of this drive:

I'd also recommend stops at Swatara State Park and Middle Creek Wildlife Area. Nice views at both.

Ive heard it's pretty weak everywhere but the NW.

Yep. This has been one of the more lackluster foliage years I can recall.

Blah. Thanks guys. I guess a side trip to the Adirondack might be in order. Leaving extremely early on Friday, so plenty of time to make it up. Can't get there before 7pm anyway. On the bright side, the upcoming pattern will be great for the foliage. I would bet northern PA will be turning rapidly starting this weekend. Of course, ridge looks to come back next week.....

Man, gfs is downright frigid looking in the day 4-6 range. Maybe a met can tell me what it is depicting as far as surface temps, as I see the 850 0 degree line deep into Virginia, I would think we might have a hard time cracking 40 a couple of those days, and lake effect might be a possibility?
