Brick Tamland
Here's a good list of swimming holes near Boone. I think the one I am thinking of is the Hebron Rock Colony. http://boonerealestate.com/top-10-swimming-holes-around-boone-nc/

buckeyefan1
highlands and cashiers are nice, both are above 3500ft. You're close to lake Glenville and plenty of rivers and waterfalls. You can also hike to the top of Whiteside mtn it's between highlands and cashiers. Those places look amazing Mt Mitchell / Burnsville. The highest point on the east coast huh? That should be cool enough I'm thinking I just start driving on the scenic highway and make a giant loop. All these waterfalls and not enough daylight to experience them all

Brick Tamland
My wife turns 50 this weekend soo... I made the obligatory trip to the new Bass Pro Shop and got her something nice. I hadn't fished in a long time until last weekend at the lake with the kids. They used one of those little kids rods and hot dogs to catch a bunch of brim and catfish off the boat dock. NRVwxfan.
Don't do it, never did, never will for those reasons. We have a page for the farm and my wife has one that's all I need to confirm my feelings on Facebook. Its a good way to connect with people that share a hobby. NRVwxfan.
Facebook is great if people would just keep their political thoughts off it. Some people post as if they think everyone on their friends list will agree with them, and then get all mad if someone doesn't. There's a reason you don't discuss politics and religion with friends. You win the Internet for the week for this post. Bravo.

NRVwxfan.
If people want to share their political or religious views on Facebook, then they should feel free to do so all they want. It's their page and they should be able to freely write what they want. On the other hand, people that read those comments have the right to think what they want about them. But, if it's super annoying, nobody forces anyone to read comments or remain friends with someone, right? It is what it is, and you know that going in. The reason people don't discuss politics or religion with friends and family is because people aren't mature enough to respect somebody else's views one something. A novel concept would be that it is possible to completely disagree with someone and have a respectful, adult conversation and *gasp* still be friends. There is usually much more to like about someone than there is to dislike about them, especially if they're already your friend. The premise of avoiding tough subjects for the sake of maintaining peace is not a sound one. And, through such a conversation, one might even learn something. NRVwxfan.
Everyone would get along better if there were no more labels...such as "us" against "them".....we are called the UNITED states of America for a reason. A place where everyone is created equal as stated by our declaration of independence. Ya know....it's what this country is founded on. Word of advice....... Be part of the solution, not part of the problem Now....back to your regular scheduled program I'm headed toward the mountains tomorrow. Anything to get away from the heat....sigh. It's even too hot to be near the water Why do you think Columbia's slogan is "Famously Hot"?

We sank a boat off the coast of NC Oct. of 79. My wife has claimed all of the fish in our pond as pets so that's out. The kayak might get me back into it. jburns
Yeah esp now that the "50th" birthday thing is really messing w/her. Let me give you some advice. Do not get her a card that contains the words, "over 50 years of service" or "half century". It doesn't turn out well.
CherokeeGA
Interesting RAS paper on predicting upcoming solar activity. http://www.ras.org.uk/news-and-press/2680-irregular-heartbeat-of-the-sun-driven-by-double-dynamo Really don't have much of a sense of what this kind of thing would look like in the deep South, since I've never seen any sort of anecdotal (they didn't have mercury thermometers back then) reporting about it any further south than the Virginia settlements. I've heard estimates of an average 4-7 degrees Fahrenheit below normal based on studies of ice cores, tree rings, etc. I'd take that for a decade or two. Really tired of the sweltering summers we get these days, and while I don't want to wish my life away, we have every intention of moving further north when we retire.
