JTA66
Heard my first cicadas yesterday (kind of early) and saw the first lightning bugs (kind of late).
famartin
Down here in NOVA, I'm still waiting to hear katydids at night (I hope we have them here). Otherwise, its been summery for a few weeks.
Redmorninglight
Lightning bugs galore on warm and calm nights for about 10 days now. I really enjoy sitting on the back deck and getting mesmerized by the lights. Problem is the skeeters drive my indoors pretty fast. Too much rain. famartin
Katydids locally don't start their until second half of July. I've been gone so long that I didn't remember that. So, hopefully good to go down here. It will be good to just walk out my door and hear them at night again.
KamuSnow
In my experience here, generally speaking, June is lightning bugs, July is cicadas (locusts), and August is katydids. Have seen lightning bugs since around Memorial day, only a few at first, except for the lone scout that showed up in early May. The turnout this year has not been as large as last year so far, but they're putting on a good show. Haven't heard any cicadas yet.

Absolute Humidity
Many lightning bugs here and June bugs but not nearly as plump as most years.
JTA66
We lose our first minute of daylight this evening. Usually don't notice the days getting shorter until mid August or so but hey, it's a start.

KamuSnow
Heard the first cicada here yesterday morning. Canna lilies started blooming and had a hummingbird stop by just a little while ago (after the thundershower). Nice.
RedSky
First cicada on Sunday and a snake in a bird box got a nice lunch. Wild black raspberries have bore a bumper crop this summer

RedSky
What is up with the steady rise in the deer tick population the last ten years. I am going to assume larger numbers of deer. An avid outdoors person I am starting to develop an aversion for the woods because of numerable welts from those blood suckers.
stemwinder
I am starting to develop an aversion for the woods because of numerable welts from those blood suckers. I know the feeling. I pulled one off me last summer that was hiding in plain sight, feasting on my ankle. No symptoms, but it made me paranoid and cautious. Not sure if it's the deer population, or what. There are too many deer in any case. Ticks have no redeeming social or ecological value, as far as I can tell.
stemwinder
Also, heard the first cicada today. A second one (or the same) buzzed me later in the parking lot. Summer marches on. I'm guessing that the earliest cicadas are quickly made a meal of by some hungry bird.
RedSky
Last year and now this year the lawn is lush and growing fast in July, quite abberant And those freaking spider webs are back everywhere outdoors. Between them and the ticks surplus space suit needed?
stemwinder
Walt Whitman and others wrote nice poems about noiseless patient spiders, and the gossamer threads they fling. I doubt if anyone had anything nice to write about blood sucking ticks. :>) - - Glad we don't have leeches around (yet).
JTA66
No sign of stink bugs yet. Don't know if they come out later in the season or if these past two winters wiped out those stinkers.

Still months away from the Stink Bug invasion. You wont see them en masse until mid-late Sept on warm sunny days trying to invade every crack and crevice so they can overwinter. Man I hated those things. I moved to VT last fall from ChesCo and actually found some stink bug stowaways in some suitcases/boxes. Hope I didn't introduce them to this area

Tonight, the first katydid of the summer here was yakking in a nearby tree. Funny to hear it on a cool evening. Summer's moving along.
