Why does Newark have lower lows than the city?

I notice that too. I figure heat escapes Newark better it a very open area. Also while the airport and city of Newark itself is very urban I think areas around there are marshy type soil which while heats up easy it also cools off fast too. JFK is like that too in terms of soil type.

Today could be the first 90 degree day at Islip in 2 years. This is already the longest streak

without hitting 90 there since 1984.

The two-year stretch without a temperature of 90 of higher at the airport is the longest since the National Weather Service started keeping records there in 1984, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center, based at Cornell University.

The previous longest stretch was 709 days, from July 6, 2003, to June 13, 2005.

I remember lows in the low to mid 80s were reserved only for our most intense heatwaves.

If the current 83 at LGA is the minimum, then it's a new record.

But the max yesterday and the forecast for today are below the record highs.
