THANK YOU Pam!! I'd seen a couple of those maps before and couldn't find them online. Those are the most detailed maps I've seen and are great to look at. Some time in the next couple of years I'll probably be moving, and would like to be in a snowier area that is not cut off from everything else (though if I didn't have to work I wouldn't mind that at all though). I didn't realize that areas in NE CT average that much snow.....something to think about, although every time I look further, I get pulled right back in and around the NYC area.....I love it, and will probably still end up in N/NWNJ

The thing of it is...unless one is independently wealthy and making money is an afterthought...we generally all gravitate towards places where good jobs are available...factoring in considerations such as the safety of the locale from a physical and environmental perspective as well.  The local climate is not often the main consideration.

Ah yes I meant to type NW CT, and the Litchfield Hills will definitely be a place to consider. That map seem very accurate for the NW NJ areas, so I presume that would hold true all the way up the coast on the other maps. I've been living in northern (but not western) NJ all of my life and hadn't realized just how many areas well east of Kittatinny Mountain sit above 1,000'.

In the highlands of Morris and Sussex county, a short 5-10 minute drive can bring you from 450' up to 1,150'and back down. It definitely would lead to more snowfall in some cases, due to not being on or just SE of the rain/snow line as often. However, as we know, areas such as LI and SNE have been hammered several times in the past few years due to their proximity to the coast and the powerhouse storms unloading very heavy bands of snow over those areas.

Well, by the end of the month, most areas will be averaging high temps in the low 70s and nighttime lows in the upper 50s. Looking forward to it and glad to have some great people to share the excitement with! Thank you! I've made many futile attempts to make winter storms seem exciting to those around me. Not many enjoy the snow, although evidently everyone does enjoy making unnecessary trips to the grocery store to get food before and during a storm, and having phatic conversations with strangers, as if the storm would prevent them from being able to open their doors to the outside world for a few weeks. Always found that to be funny !!

That's very true. A lot of Morris County is really high in elevation, as well as Sussex and Passaic. Warren actually levels out a bit into the valleys. Where I am, the elevation can climb from say 380' to 700'+ pretty quick. The times you really see how the elevation works around here is in the Fall when you get those cool frosty nights, and with snowfalls that depend on elevation. Otherwise, like now, the heat is pretty relative throughout the elevation ranges, except maybe if you're in a heavily wooded area or park.

I had .34" when I left my house at 6am, Im taking my son to school. The ride out 84 sucked in the pouring rain and then thick fog on 81 on PA. I thought I was out off the bad weather once we got to southern PA but then we hit numerous torrential downpours along 81 in VA. Thankfully they didn't last long, just a few minutes for the most part for each one.

Irishrob & Julian are the kings of RC.. They will prob hit freezing tonight lol

Haha, Imagine that.

You won't go lower than the dew point.

In the city, the dew point is quite a bit lower tonight.

Right, that's fine by me though since the DP's are in the low 50's.

Nice little storm atm. No shortage of lightning.

Wow, lots of reports of hail/power outages/tree damage: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=930785050317601. Central Hudson reporting roughly 5k customers without power so far.

The core skirted just north of me so I escaped with .56" of rain and a plenitude of lightning. Funny that the worst storm of the year by far in the county should occur without a watch or warning.

A friend of mine who lives up that way posted about how awesome the storm was and she's not a weather geek in any way.

Torch. KPOU tied the record high of 94F at 2pm (steady at 93 since then) and verified a second heat wave for the year.

Not sure if it was mentioned already but I like the upgrades made here with the overlays http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/

The best part is finally being able to save satellite loops as GIFs. Can't wait to make use of the updated site the next time we get some interesting synoptic wx.
