Iceagewhereartthou
All this talk of the upcoming heat wave and comparisons to July 1993 got me thinking back. I remember July 1993 as being like 5-6 weeks (total) of unrelenting heat, very dry, and the worst of my life. I remember thinking I would hate to see the month that was worse than that one. You guys all seem to remember it quite fondly as well! But that month was replaced in my memory by August 07, as being the worst month in my lifetime, though I rarely see any of you mention that one. I remember August 07 as being stunningly (and record breakingly) hot, very humid with high daily mins, and lasting about the entire month, with June and July of that year having been just pretty typical stuff. I decided to do some research and found that my memory is actually pretty close, at least for my immediate area. I looked up the daily summaries for each month (on Wunderground) for KGSP. Here are the links below. As you can see, August 07 was way worse, with a crazy 10 days of the month being 100 or higher. The previous record for such days at GSP prior to that was 10 days in an entire year! The daily lows were also significantly higher in August 07. I also looked up the info for KCAE and saw similar results. http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KGSP/1993/7/1/CustomHistory.html?dayend=31&monthend=7&yearend=1993&req_city=&req_state=&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=&reqdb.magic=&reqdb.wmo= http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KGSP/2007/8/1/CustomHistory.html?dayend=31&monthend=8&yearend=2007&req_city=&req_state=&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=&reqdb.magic=&reqdb.wmo= http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KGMU/2007/8/1/CustomHistory.html?dayend=31&monthend=8&yearend=2007&req_city=&req_state=&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=&reqdb.magic=&reqdb.wmo= The first link is KGSP 1993. Second is KGSP 2007. The third is KGMU (closer to Greenville's Urban core) 2007 and shows generally a couple degrees cooler with 6 -100 degree days that month. Sorry about the long links - not sure how to shorten them. Perhaps someone more savvy than I knows how to embed the graphs in the post and that would be easier. Obviously, you might have very different experinces at your location. You can change the stations to look at your own. What was your experience? jshetley
August of 2007 was much worse for the heat by a long way where I am, but July 1993 was much drier. Overall, 1993 was not as bad drought wise, since the winter and spring before had been wet. The winter and spring of 2007 had been drier, so that made the 2007 summer much worse as far as drought goes.
