sferic
Any bets as to when that snowpile shown on TV this week around Boston can possibly last? I never heard of snow around a major megalopolis hanging around into May letalone June.

LongBeachSurfFreak
Any bets as to when that snowpile shown on TV this week around Boston can possibly last? I never heard of snow around a major megalopolis hanging around into May letalone June. The crazy thing is the layer of crap on top of the remaining snow is probably feet thick and acting to insulate the remaining snow which is compressed just like a glacier. I say it lasts until we finnaly see some sustained heat in the north east some time in July

jm1220
Yup still there according to mayor. It'll be such a sad occasion when the disgusting, dirt-ice finally melts entirely. It should be given an obituary in the Boston Globe. Maybe some of us should arrange a 24-7 vigil.

I say it lasts until we finnaly see some sustained heat in the north east some time in July Don't know about the Boston pile, but the dirt-cap on the Augusta, Maine snowdump is usually jst a few inches - less than 6" - thick. Still enough to add some insulation, but airflow, or lack of it, is also key to persistence. The main Augusta dump is open to southerly breezes coming up the Kennebec, and this year it disappeared during the run of mid 80s in late May. However, the monster pile of 2008 (AKA "Central Maine glacier"), perhaps 70' deep at its tallest, didn't finish melting until August 25.
Rjay
2 days of 40s and fog will melt an entire 12" OTG in my area.
jm1220
2 days of 40s and fog will melt an entire 12" OTG in my area. Humidity is far, far worse for a snowpack than a drier warmer airmass. A moist airmass at 37F actually caries significantly more heat energy than a 37F dry airmass.

Once the wind goes onshore and the fog comes rolling in its bye bye snow
