dWave
Be interesting to see if some of the new shadows can enhance the canopy cooling over the ASOS at times. It at least looks like the shadows won't make it that far north in the summer. http://www.scribd.com/doc/193282206/Accidental-Skyline I've noticed these new bldgs more recently. One in particular, not sure which one it is but I see it from all over the Bx now and it towers over the Empire State Bldg. While this is mostly anecdotal, I never found Midtown to be the hottest part of NYC as some might think. Theres so many shadows from the high rises it feels like the ground never gets a full day of sun. To me it seem the highly urban but low to mid rise neighborhoods heat up the most, like upper Manhattan, most the BX and NW Queens...at least when it comes to daytime temps. During nights midtown prob is the warmest with tall bldgs acting like a canopy trapping heat in addition to the regular UHI.

rclab
Did the original design of the Freedom Tower have the spire enclosed in some kind of clear construct and lit from within? To me the present tower design looks incomplete.

To me the present tower design looks incomplete. Yes it did. It was deemed unfeasible.432 park is ugly end of story. Like forky said no one will live there. It's all foreign investment money. It should never been approved. I'm all for bigger buildings and an ever evolving sky line but that building sucks. It was built that way because it was the most cost effective and fastest way to build it. Luckly the other huge buildings going up on 57th are interesting. Especially the moma tower

Especially the moma tower 432 had a super tiny footprint available to it. I'm not saying it had no choice but to be boxy, but they also didn't have as much leeway regarding creativity because of its very tiny footprint. The MOMA tower is by far the coolest looking building coming up. Too bad it was shaved down by 200 feet.

bluewave
20th anniversary of the great Adirondack Derecho. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/aly/Past/derecho95/derecho.html PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENTNATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ALBANY, NY700 AM EDT FRI JUL 15 2005...10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ADIRONDACK DERECHO (WINDSTORM)...TODAY MARKS THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE JULY 15 1995 DERECHO THAT RAVAGED MUCHOF EASTERN NEW YORK AND WESTERN NEW ENGLAND. A DERECHO IS A WIDESPREAD AND LONGLIVED WINDSTORM THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH A BAND OF RAPIDLY MOVING THUNDERSTORMS.IN 1995...A LINE OF DAMAGING THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED IN THE NORTHERN GREAT LAKESDURING THE NIGHT OF JULY 14 AND QUICKLY STRENGTHENED AS IT MOVED INTO NORTHERN NEW YORK BY 4 AM ON JULY 15...AND THEN INTO SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND BY 8 AM. ESTIMATED PEAK WIND SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 100 MPH OCCURRED IN THE ADIRONDACKS AND THE STORMS THEMSELVES COVERED OVER 800 MILES (FROM ONTARIO PROVINCE TO CAPE COD) IN LESS THAN 12 HOURS...MOVING AT AN AVERAGE FORWARD SPEED OF 67 MPH. THIS DERECHO RESULTED IN FIVE DEATHS AND 11 INJURIES AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO NEARLY ONE MILLION ACRES OF TREES IN THE ADIRONDACKS. ALSOIT WAS ONE OF THE COSTLIEST WINDSTORMS IN EASTERN NORTH AMERICA...WITH NEARLY A HALF BILLION DOLLARS IN DAMAGES. http://www.cbs6albany.com/shared/weather/images/maps/ClimateData/weather_historical_daily/1995/Derecho_95.html A Case Account Saturday July 15, 1995 New York - New England Super Derecho (Severe Thunderstorm Outbreak aka "The Adirondack Blow Down") Very early on the morning of Saturday, July 15, 1995 a rare and extremely powerful thunderstorm complex developed over Ontario, Canada. The system exploded, much like a bomb going off, rapidly intensifying and growing in aerial coverage. A strong northwest jet stream flow propagated the thunderstorm cluster at speeds of 50 to 60 mph through upstate New York and New England. During its five hours of life, the leading edge of the complex produced widespread winds ranging from 50 to 100 mph as well as several suspected small tornadoes. At 6:43 am the cluster arrived at the Albany airport, Albany, NY producing hail and Albany's second highest wind gust on record to date of 77 mph. Less than an hour later a 92 mph wind gust occurred in Otis, MA. Nearly a dozen people regionally lost their lives, dozens more were injured, millions of trees were felled in the Adirondack State Park alone, and thousands were left without electricity for up to a week after the storm. Most counties in upstate New York and western New England reported some type of damage from the immense line of thunderstorms. Meteorological SetupA record breaking hot, humid day preceded the development of the ferocious thunderstorm complex which blasted much of New York and New England. Temperatures across the region climbed to the century mark in combination with excessively high levels of humidity. Dewpoint temperatures hovered in the middle 70's the evening prior to the outbreak. Albany, NY recorded a record high temperature of 99 degrees F after a morning record high minimum temperature of 74 degrees F on July 14.
CIK62
And let's not forget this event "NYC LABOR DAY 1998 DERECHO" http://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/casepages/sep71998page.htm After a summer of primarily 'elevated TS' or misses and with just 3.5hrs. left in the official summer season, this baby hit us. I was on the beach in CI when an AccuweaterLiveReport said we had 45mins. to get off the beach, which I did. System was still 50+miles out at that point and it did not look that ominous yet. The 45mins. warning was quite accurate.

I'm a huge plant guy so lack of rain for me is a big deal Today is the worst: I can't say it's a south shore thing because it's ripping to my south over the barrier islands. Taller than anything around it by far, and even a 100 or so feet taller than the Empire State Building. I find it crazy that they built a thin building like that taller than the Freedom Tower without the spire. I still think the Freedom Tower is one of the best looking buildings in the city though, I really like the wide stance it has. Also, I've been reading up on some other projects, and supposedly one called the Nordstrom Tower is in the works. It's supposed to be 1 foot shorter than the Freedom Tower, and that's including both Spires.

Amazing. Check this out as well: http://111w57.com/ This building called 111th West 57th Street is actually going to be taller than 432 Park Ave, and in fact it gets thinner as it rises. Sundog
The reason they stopped one foot short of 1WTC is so stupid. So are we to expect no building cross the 1,776 foot threshold ever? We need a 2,000 foot tower. At one point a building was proposed to be 1,800 feet called the Hudson Spire next to the Hudson Yards but it was significantly chopped down unfortunately.
