Chinook
Today I was watching the most recent Weatherbrains program. They interviewed one of the programmers of SHARPpy (interactive sounding program). Apparently you can just download the 55MB executable and start using it. It creates observed and forecast soundings with the same calculations as the SPC observed soundings page. Quincy
Awesome, thanks for sharing! I saw some posting those soundings and now I know how they generated them! Very useful.
Stebo
Yeah I tried setting this up before using their instructions. I couldn't figure it out, but I am damn glad that there is a .exe now. It will be great to be able to modify soundings especially off of the GFS which locally tends to lowball the temperatures.
Ian
Nice. I tried the other as well and never figured it out. Have even used Python a bit before heh. This will help it get good play I'm sure,

This will help it get good play I'm sure, Yeah the Python part is where I got hung up. It is nice though because back in college we had a program that ran on a linux base called Nsharp, that is very similar to this. Not to mention this is a bit like the sounding output from AWIPS which I used back during my internship at NWS-DTX back in college.
Chinook
The only one thing that confused me a bit: you have to click on the right-hand side of the pull-down menus to get them to show the options.
Ian
Does this install or do you have to run the exe every time you use it? Tried last night and then couldn't find it anywhere this morning.

huronicane
Cool, thanks. I just put it on my desktop! Unfortunately for you today, the data points for NE Colorado are very sparse. Outside of the Denver Metro and Limon, no sounding points. Edit: Looks like a couple for Akron.

Disc
Thanks for posting this. I got it to run using Python, but now it is one click away as opposed to writing out a whole run command to start it up.
Quincy
I finally got around to downloading and trying this out. It's very useful and was easier than I expected to get up and running. Edit to answer my own question: To save a sounding/file, just click CTRL-S while viewing.
Stebo
Anyone have problems loading the NAM 4KM soundings on SHARPpy? I noticed when I tried loading them earlier this week, just wondering if it is me or everyone.

Disc
Anyone have problems loading the NAM 4KM soundings on SHARPpy? I noticed when I tried loading them earlier this week, just wondering if it is me or everyone. Works fine when I run it through Python. Must be the .exe version having the problem? Superstorm93
Are they planning on releasing any further updates? The site doesn't say anything specific about future bug fixes.
andyhb
Found out how to access the SHARPpy SARS analog soundings and display them within the program. For those who are interested, here's a short guide via tweets that should work on any operating system: https://twitter.com/ahberrington/status/684242683062165505
David Reimer
Hopefully they start keeping an updated .EXE file of the program online. I know there is one from sometime last year out there.
JonathanW
One problem I ran into -- on high dpi screens (e.g. the Surface Pros, Yogas and other recent PCs), the location map can be hard to access, as it's simply too small.As with other programs that don't yet take such screens into account, it can be fixed by including a "manifest" file in the same directory as the executable. You'll also need to modify the registry as found here: http://www.danantonielli.com/adobe-app-scaling-on-high-dpi-displays-fix/ The file should be named "sharpy.exe.manifest": <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0" xmlns:asmv3="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3"> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" version="6.0.0.0" processorArchitecture="*" publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df" language="*"> </assemblyIdentity> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.VC90.CRT" version="9.0.21022.8" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"> </assemblyIdentity> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> <trustInfo xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3"> <security> <requestedPrivileges> <requestedExecutionLevel level="asInvoker" uiAccess="false"/> </requestedPrivileges> </security> </trustInfo> <asmv3:application> <asmv3:windowsSettings xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SMI/2005/WindowsSettings"> <ms_windowsSettings:dpiAware xmlns:ms_windowsSettings="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SMI/2005/WindowsSettings">false</ms_windowsSettings:dpiAware> </asmv3:windowsSettings> </asmv3:application> </assembly>
