  1. 1. What grade would you give the winter of 2014-2015?

Now that our (most likely) final event has exited stage right and springlike temperatures appear to be just ahead, it's time to look back and reflect on the winter of 2014-2015. Vote in the poll and if you like, post an explanation!

My grade is an A, 1/24-2/15 was the best winter period of my life bar none but the fact that more than half of met winter scores an F and the finish was uninspiring at best keeps me from giving it an A+.

LOL so what's an A+? You had two storms near 2' or better, record snow pack and snow fall. Try beating that one.

A in Natick and A- in ORH.

There's a level of subjectivity here for grading. I love snow for the holidays and it was a flat out disaster. Not even one decent event in the 2-3 weeks leading up to Christmas. Even if it melts before that. So for that, I cannot give a grade higher. Esp or ORH where it's more part of the climo. We would have needed a big march to overcome that.

We did get a 6"+ storm for thanksgiving though which was awesome. I measured a snow depth in excess of 40" for the first time since March 2001 too. Coldest Month on record. Snowiest month on record. In the same month. Awesome.

Currently 3rd snowiest winter on record.

It's all subjective so who cares what people grade their perception of Winter.

That being said, I give it an A for MBY.

Late start to the snow kept me from going A+.  It's right there though.  Like 1" vs 1.5".

True dat, people can grade what they think but I don"t know how my area could get any better. I exchanged Dec for March, as usual though I did better in March. Late start has nothing to do with my grade. I thought about an A but could not envision any better being possible so A+ in relation to all the winters of my past.

I mean for this area, not sure how it could be better. I don't speak for Worcester or CRV.

I gave it an A only because A+ means perfection to me and December/January could have been better.  That being said, we had (and still have some left) tons of snow on the ground and the coldest month ever.  It really can't get better than that.  March came in as my coldest March ever.  I think this winter came as close to perfection as you can get.  We've had one or the other and this winter included just about everything, sometimes all at once.

I voted A-, could have gone with a B+.

grade could only be higher if it had been a longer period of activity. outside of 1/25-2/15, it was pathetic really.

but during that period, it was pretty prolific

The staying power of the snowpack helped the grade as well

Did you measure in Natick?

Yes when I could, about 115" worth. Probably 2nd all time in Natick behind '95-'96....though it's possible that 1947-1948 could have had a bit more in Natick...but no good records available.

I went with A, but it would really be more like an A/A+

Like Will mentioned above, I really do like to see snow around the holiday's even if my area has lesser chance than Worcester area of such, which is just about 35 miles north of me.  Also, as people here know, the cold followed by rain bugs the crap out of me.  More so than a mild winter with lots of rain.

With that being said, this is how I rate the season:

-Snow amount for season: A+

-Cold for season: A+

-Length of snow cover on the ground (longevity of 100% coverage): A+

-Snow fall consistency for the winter months: A- (December-mid January did this one in, but November, although a fall month stepped up the plate nicely, as did March)

-Snow useability (winter sports IMBY, mainly snowshoeing): A (sometimes it was just to freaking deep)

* Bonus credit for HECS that may likely never happen in this area for 100 years or more (31" worth), and reaching personal record in this location of 100" for the season.

B+. too long of a stretch at the beginning with no snow and then too many near misses to the East despite the solid above average seasonal snowfall and record cold for me to give it an A in this area.

My grade and reasoning are very similar to this.

Temps get an A- (only last winter was colder for DJFM, though 02-03 was close) and B- for snowfall.  Both last winter and 08-09 get better snowfall grades despite having 10% less total snowfall.  08-09 had my biggest event here plus a solid Dec blizzard, and top snowdepth of 49" and only an early Jan storm and the March 2 event came in disappointingly.  Last year was 2nd best for snow depth days and reached 46", and featured 5 double-digit snowfalls, most in any winter here.  Watching eastern SNE and downeast Maine bag 3X to 4X my Feb snow wasn't fun, and three busts in which my total was 1/8 of the low end of the forecast range left a sour taste, too, which peaked with the mid-Feb blizzbust.  Then no March recovery like we saw last year.  Good winter overall, but lots of potential left on the table.

A+

I have to be realistic about it. Double climo snowfall with record cold. December was a dud, and the final stretch may not have been snowy as some would like, but we held on to the pack for an incredibly long time with a complete lack of cutters and warmth in February and March. I doubt I'll see much better anytime soon.

A++ here. Hands down. I don't care how bad December through 1/24 was.

Obviously if I had to be picky, I'd want snow on Christmas and a 30" March, but realistically the chances of those in my area aren't very high in the first place.  So how do we surmount a bad start to winter? Well 100" in less than a month is one way with a record snow pack depth and cold that helped continue it into April. For these parts, we had something really nobody has even seen except maybe the local Massasoit tribe.  Impact is one way I like to measure winters, and this one couldn't be any more of an impact around my area. I throw in the cold as well. Despite the slow start and the finish that was rather anti-climactic...I really struggle to go below A+.

Is there a way that the same amount of snowfall could lead to something better than a B-? Serious question. Curious as to why so low when you had a good winter with sustained cold and snow.

Well, It was not a record snowfall, And B- is above avg, If i was going to grade by cold it would be an A, The part where we had 7 weeks of misses nickels or dimes is where i feel it does not deserve an A
