April Discussion

If it hasn't been already, it should be noted by someone that yesterday, (Tax Day, Jackie Robinson Day and the 150th anniversary of the death of our greatest president Abraham Lincoln), April 15, 2015 marked the first day to reach 70° in NYC since last October 29, 2014 a string of 167 consecutive days.

We failed to top the streak from two years ago when New York City saw 174 consecutive days without reaching 70°. That streak began on October 15, 2012 and ended on April 8, 2013. Neither came anywhere near the all-time record, (Uncle W what is the all time record?) but an impressive streak regardless. I know most people were looking forward to warmer days but I hate it when any streak ends.

RIP Honest Abe.

Saturday continues to look like it will be the warmest day of the spring so far with highs

from 75 to around 80 degrees in spots on a warm downslope flow. The mixed

layer is fairly deep so we could see wind gusts in the 25-35 mph range with the

front later in the day.

I know, a month or two to late.

We broke the record for most +NAO days from January 1st through April 15h with only a single negative day.

The last time the NAO saw a dip below -1 was October 17th. So you had to know that we had see a drop

at some point and the trough signal in the Northeast looks pretty strong for later in the month. Some areas

especially N and W of NYC could see lows in the 30's for late April.

one day in late April 1966 NYC had a max of 42 and a min of 39 with some light rain...A horrible spring day...I remember the days it was cool because I usually was playing some kind of sport out doors and tracking the weather......I remember freezing in late April 1976 one night...this came after the 96 on Easter Sunday that year...I think late April into early May could have some cool days...If we hit 80 before that it will feel even cooler...I'm guessing the first 90 comes in late May this year...before that happens we could see a few days we need to wear a winter jacket...

I remember April 1976 very well. It was in the 20's a few days before NYC hit 96 and then fell to lows in the 30's after that.

Can you remember the trace of snow during May 1977? I was too young at the time for it to stand out in my memory

but there was plenty of tree damage in the interior NE.

13 years ago on this date...96 degrees, hard to believe.

Yeah, no winter to speak of followed by spring heat and a blazing hot summer. That winter was a record for me going

for walks and bike rides on the Long Beach boardwalk. You knew something was up when numerous people

were jogging in shorts that winter.

One town in the Catskills, Slide mountain, received 27 inches from that storm. Where I lived in Orange County we received 2 or 3 inches, on May 10th with everything pretty much greened up that was a bizarre sight.

Of course 10 years later we had the October 3, 1987 storm which seemed to take down the tops of every tree in the HV. Parts of Dutchess county had well over a foot of snow, in Orange County we had anywhere from 2-6 inches.

May 1977 had wet snow and rain mixed one morning...If I didn't see it with my own eyes it would be hard to believe it happened...1966 and 1967 had May snow north of the city...LGA recorded ice pellets in late May 1961...

That whole year was an unusual one with the record winter cold and May snow. Summer was essentially a 9 day

heatwave in mid July with mostly comfortable temperatures before and after it. But everyone remembers it

since it was when the famous NYC blackout occurred. I will never forget watching TV on LI at the time

and having all off the TV stations go off the air as our power remained on.

73 for my high...quite humid..it was my 4th plus 70 reading...tomorrow I will soar over 80...despite the calls for cool weather the warm air is winnng out

No one was calling for cool weather till post 4/20. I don't think it will be that cool but days of highs in the 50s and lows in the mid to upper 30s seem very possible.

The coolest weather this time of year comes off an east wind with strong onshore flow so despite a blocking pattern, temps won't be terribly cool on N/NW winds.
