ApacheTrout
I missed it! My app didn't alert me and wake me up it was cloudy this morning, as per agreement with the weather & borealis gods.
eyewall
it was cloudy this morning, as per agreement with the weather & borealis gods. Well that is good then. I was out cold at 11 last night. I wasn't quite sure when the clouds had really rolled in.
Juliancolton
One of the more impressive VIIRS aurora shots I've seen, showing the extent of the oval at 3 am:
Professional Lurker
Bz doesn't look so hot at the moment, but things may improve. ...could be something?
eekuasepinniW
lots of meh. bz and density are fine but the solar wind is too slow. there is/will continue be activity but it probably won't be worth standing in the freezing cold unless you're doing long exposure photos. Juliancolton
SWPC just issued a G3 warning, which is a bit peculiar.

eyewall
the moon is very bright. I just went out and any pic I took looked almost day like. If it is there it will be extremely tough to see.
Professional Lurker
Yeah, that is a big drawback. ...and it doesn't set until like 4:30. Ugh.
eekuasepinniW
SWPC just issued a G3 warning, which is a bit peculiar. Yeah, a G3 with solar wind speeds below 400 seems like a stretch, but I guess we'll find out soon.

OceanStWx
Solar wind is 544 km/s and the Bz is -7.6 Nice dense wind too. If we can just keep the convective debris clear, things look good.
eyewall
Nice dense wind too. If we can just keep the convective debris clear, things look good. Yeah I am going to have to actually go a bit south to avoid some junk.
OceanStWx
Yeah I am going to have to actually go a bit south to avoid some junk. Yeah, it's not placed in a good spot for us either. Right about where we normally try to view it, unless we can get some curtains higher in the sky.
eekuasepinniW
It's just too weak.... a Btotal of under 10 is borderline background noise. I'm sure MWN and 30 second exposures will find a glow to exaggerate, but this show is for central Canada.
eyewall
I got nothing but far off thunderstorms and debris clouds. Where it was clear nothing was showing up.

eekuasepinniW
Bt has slowly creeped up to the bare minimum of around 15, so there will be glows. If the bz gets back to -10 there could be some better defined visible features.

eekuasepinniW
anything tonight? I wanna see it so bad! density: 12.9, good speed: 448, poor IMF: 16.9, moderate Bz: +12.2, dreadful Not seeing anything with those numbers. If the IMF stays above 15 and Bz goes back south, then maybe some glows and meh will be seen. Keep waiting for a well timed flare and CME... tracking these random spurts of solar wind is right up there with tracking alberta clippers. Juliancolton
Keep waiting for a well timed flare and CME... tracking these random spurts of solar wind is right up there with tracking alberta clippers. I think the only way to really take advantage of the ambient solar wind in the mid-latitudes is for a coronal hole stream to sort of intersect a CIR, though I'm not sure how often that happens in reality. I'm hoping we're not done with real sunspots for the rest of the cycle. That active region a couple weeks ago was huge, but pretty benign magnetically.
