ApacheTrout
A severe (K8) geomagnetic storm is underway. Perhaps it'll last long enough for viewing tonight and the skies will clear.
Juliancolton
The Wing Kp data has been missing for several hours per http://services.swpc.noaa.gov/text/wing-kp.txt. Not sure what's up with that.
ice1972
Heard on the radio this morning it was visible up in northern new england last night.....possibly further south but was cloudy and rainy....either way.....very cool
Whineminster
Will the power grid go down? Heavy heavy photons. We blackout.
eyewall
It was cloudy here overnight so we didn't have a shot. There is a chance this evening but not sure the storm will hold up.

eekuasepinniW
Kp "down" to 7 at 21z. That not-so-perfect period a few hours ago led to the slight kp drop. Bt is climbing and Bz is dropping. Looks really good. Wouldn't be surprised if it went back to 8, just need the density to stop dropping.

Juliancolton
The storming has sustained itself better than I expected it would. Kp 7 into this evening would be more than acceptable.
eyewall
I agree. The Aurora pic you see as my profile is one I took with a Kp of 6 or so. What are your thoughts on this thing holding for another 3 hours or so? The main issue here is finding enough breaks in the clouds.

CT Rain
Wing Kp model back up and predicting Kp 9 in four hours. Good good. I saw that... though Kp has dropped from 8 to 7 in last update.
eekuasepinniW
Density is going back up. Everything looks primed for a big show well down into the mid atlantic.

Juliancolton
Ugh... it literally never fails. Almost sickening if it started getting meh right as dark falls after looking so good all day. At least the other parameters still look decent.
eekuasepinniW
That period of higher density and lower Bz from an hour ago should be here by now. Too bad these troll squalls won't leave me alone.

CT Rain
God damn Bz trying to pull its usual well timed flip. Maybe it'll level out. What is Bz? Why is it important?
eekuasepinniW
What is Bz? Why is it important? It's basically the aurora light switch. If the value is north (positive) nobody sees anything except santa. "When Bz is south, that is, opposite Earth's magnetic field, the two fields link up," explains Christopher Russell, a Professor of Geophysics and Space Physics at UCLA. "You can then follow a field line from Earth directly into the solar wind" -- or from the solar wind to Earth. South-pointing Bz's open a door through which energy from the solar wind can reach Earth's atmosphere! Southward Bz's often herald widespread auroras, triggered by solar wind gusts or coronal mass ejections that are able to inject energy into our planet's magnetosphere. eekuasepinniW
Things holding steady in meh territory. Took a photo of the west through a hole in the clouds, about 45 degrees above the horizon, and it's violet. There is likely a greenish arc lower on the northern horizon hidden behind the squalls. Damn squalls are 10 miles away and I'm getting wind blown snow from them.
Juliancolton
My camera sensor is seeing increasingly funky colors on the northern horizon. Going to stay on the lookout for a substorm. Sure is cold and blustery though... quite conducive to aurora chasing.

CT Rain
Still, it's good enough to go back to a Kp of 8 apparently. Are Bz and Kp related? For example will a positive Bz hurt the Kp or are the 2 indicies unrelated?

After years of trying to catch the odd spike to Kp 7, I'm not sure what I expected hours and hours of Kp 8 to look like, but it sure wasn't this. lol
