bowtie`
On the afternoon of the 11th, had some nice afternoon clouds.
bowtie`
The sunset this evening. What it started as... What it started to become... What it ended as...
bowtie`
Sunset this evening. What I started with... An artsy-fartsy framing a couple of minutes later... Last dregs... And now for something completely different. This was after I had gotten back to the car to go home. You can tell just how dark it is by how bright the tail-lights are on the interstate. The clouds at the top of the image are past straight up vertical seeing how this is at 16mm. And it is dark, dark up there but the clouds are still being illuminated by the Sun because they are so high.
bowtie`
Just two images of the sunset this evening... A wide angle version @23mm And a telephoto version @100mm
bowtie`
A busy day behind the viewfinder. Afternoon pre storm build up... Looking south... Looking north... Just before the rains, looking south again... Post storm and Sunset... There must be a pot'o'gold in the firehouse... What I started with the sunset... What I ended with... bowtie`
Driving home from work, I saw some high clouds and said to myself, " If those can hang together it might be a decent sunset". Local sunset... Transitioning to post sunset colors... The best of the bunch ( in my book)... Last dregs...
bowtie`
Such a variety of sky condition the past two days. Yesterday, zero clouds. 100% blue sky. This afternoon, partly cloudy. This evening, cloudy. with the clearing visible just to the south... And to the west, even though it is not visible, the clearing has to be just past the horizon as the red flash was just nudging into the area. bowtie`
Tonight was rather subtle post sunset...
bowtie`
Conditions when I got there, perfect. Shortly after I got there, a couple came and started water training their retriever. Totally trashed the mirror surface. Best I could do at max dynamics... By the time it was getting so dark that they left, most of the good color and detail was gone... bowtie`
Originally I thought that tonight's sunset would be 100% overcast and a photo bust. But as I finished dinner I noticed a small clearing so I rolled the die and headed out to the pond. What I started with as I got out there. I think this looks like a cross-cut of an eyeball and it's vision. The red flash was more of an orange flash but still just a touch vivid. This last image is really too late and dark, so the blue color is really too wonky but I like the design. Glad I did make it out to witness this one. bowtie`
I almost threw all of tonight's sunset images in the recycle bin but I had a change of heart and decided to show what an end of summer sunset looks like before they become all 100% stratus bore-fests. bowtie`
A nice sunset this evening. Hey look! The Sun is setting on the south side of the billboard now. A sure sign that cooler temps will be here, soon. About as still as it was going to get... Last of the evening. Shot at 16mm and cropped down, top and bottom, to try and make it look a bit more expansive.
bowtie`
Unofficial end of summer sunset shots. Water was relatively calm when I got there... Turned into a *fishy* sunset a tad bit later... Unfortunately a breeze came up then and stayed up till most of the color was gone... Back at the car, a shot of the three levels of clouds. The dark grey of the low scud. The medium grey of the mid altitude clouds. And the dim white clouds that you can see on the edge that are still being illuminated by the sun that is way past the horizon... Enjoy your autumn. Geos
Decaying thunderstorms produced undulating asperatus cloud over northern IL and southern WI this morning. A sample of what they were like.
bowtie`
Was late getting to the pond this evening. Was only able to get eight images. So there was no preparation. Basically threw the camera up and fired off 8 quickies and then it got dark. So not much to choose from this evening.
bowtie`
Only extremely low-topped clouds this evening. Looking east when I got to the pond... Local sunset. See how low the clouds are? So low that even with the Sun beneath them, it could not give any color to the clouds except for the upper edges. bowtie`
Another sunset this evening. What I started with when I got to the pond... The beginning of the post sunset... About as good as it was going to get...
Seeker588
An interesting cloud formation (I'm not sure whether it was a funnel or a scud - the distance and lighting made it hard to tell whether it was rotating or not) on the tail end of a thunderstorm near Chesley, Ontario on August 24:
bowtie`
After a number of days with zero clouds in the sky, it was nice to see something in the sky this evening. When I got to the pond had some sundog action... Here recently I have pretty much given up on using HDR. I much prefer the colors with straight images. But I will include an HDR here just because shooting into the Sun creates such a dynamic range problem with straight images. Now back to the straight images and the post sunset action... Last dregs of the sunset...

bowtie`
Might as well end this page with a bang. That way no once will have to look at it anymore. Started out in a different location when I got there, while the Sun was still up. Back to my usual spot... Transitioning to post Sunset colors... Here comes the reds... Last dregs. Kind of vivid... bowtie`
October sunsets seem to have such great color when the conditions are right. But the sunsets are very short lived at this time of the year so you have to be on your game and have your changes lined up in your head ahead of time so you do not miss anything. Case in point the four images from this evening occurred in just 47 minutes and the sky conditions were changing rapidly. When I got there, the Sun is about to peek out from behind the cold front as it zooms towards the area. Once the Sun broke out, I moved and started shooting towards the south. Post sunset orange flash looking towards the west again. Post sunset red flash and the last of the evening.
bowtie`
And now for something completely different. Was out in a bean field instead of at the retention pond. First image was with the 24-70 @70mm and had the circular polarizer in front of it. I like how the polarizer was able to get the sky blue toward the top of the image. A bit later, this was taken with the 100mm and no filters. While the colors are not as vivid, the sharpness and clarity is a lot better with this lens.
