Here's my sad ode to Rockville Pike (355) across from the new Pike & Rose development. Yes, ranking storms is absolutely local down to your neighborhood, and there's no reason to change your mind just because many others had an amazing experience with a particular storm.

Here's why 1/21/14 doesn't rank all that high for me--- these pics are during the afternoon of 1/21 and near sunset:

And then 2/12-13/14--- nice accumulations during the night, but the next photo was my depressing look out of my bedroom window at 7 am right after the changeover with the road down to wet black-top.

Rockville Pike *does* get snow-covered under pretty unusual conditions. Here's 3/3/14:

But, more usual, even after a 8+" overnight snow like 3/16-17/14 that winds down around dawn, here's what it can look like at 7 am :(:

This season won in terms of covering The Pike during daytime hours----

2/21/15 South-wind storm

And.... 3/5/15 March storm that shut down DC

Winner:  Dec 8, 2013.  Pre-Christmas snow on Christmas lights.  The day we decorated our main tree, and snow NFL games on nearly every channel..  That's all it takes for me.

Runner-up:  3-5-15.  A day of snow, some heavy rates, and falling temps.  That night of deep cold and full moon really sets that storm apart.

2nd runner up:  2-21-15.  Cold powder and heavy rates, 9" total.  Heaviest period of snow I think I've seen since 1983 (picked-up .75" in 10 minutes, 2.5 inches in one hour)

Miss Congeneality:  Feb ?, 2014.  14 or 15" total.  Heavy overnight snow, 2"/hr rates for a time.  Rising temps, slushy finish, and rapid melt the next day give this a big deduction.

The night of 3/5 was special, moonshadows everywhere and heavily snow covered trees.

"the moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow gave a luster of mid-day to the objects below"

I've always found that line to be vivid in my mind.  That night epitomized that line.  Bought a wonderfully illustrated copy of that poem for my daughter (we read it to her every night before bed for months around Christmas), and that illustrated scene seemed to come to life looking outside in the wee hours that morning.

2/12/14 - 13.7" - totals and rates matter.  Pounding snow overnight outweighs the bummer of the melt.

3/16/14 - 9.1" - this much snow this late in the season?

3/5/15 - 5.1" - the March string continues, amazing winter feel as the sun went down

1/21/14 - 5.8" - I really just remember how chilly it was at the end of this one and how high-ratio the final burst was

3/3/14 - 4.8" - another cold March storm, heck of a run over the past three years

I admit I might be recency biased, but no other 13-14 contenders top these totals or stand out more to me, so here goes:

1/21/14 -- A cold, deep, aesthetically top-notch, lasting snow, well-timed for needed peace and rest 7.5"
3/5/15 -- More snow on snow on ice crunch and snow, all day snow with a cold ending, every detail pasted 5.75"
2/21/15 -- Much needed, cold, I got banded - hallelujah!, glaciation to follow 6.5"
2/12-13/14 -- 12"+ impressive but funpoints deducted for ruinous 'pt. 2' featuring hours of heavy rain/slop
2/14/2015 -- Did so much with so little snow - 1.75" - whiteouts, sick rates, insane drifts..really enjoyed this, considered ranking higher

Edit:
For WinterWxLuvr -- Decades from now people will still speak with awe of the historic 2015 VDay SuperSquall. This devastating wall of white destruction stranded millions, buckled highways and tore houses from their foundations -- some even believe it shifted Earth's axis!
