Acorn size depends on species.  Some oaks are much smaller than others. Pin Oaks, which are the most commonly planted, have small acorns.

 

We have what I believe to be a Willow Oak here, and in 4 summer-falls haven't seen one acorn. Have no idea why. But it's large and drops about 3 million leaves in the fall (the leaves are long and thin, like Willow leaves).
