MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1319
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0335 PM CDT TUE JUL 07 2015

AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL APPALACHIANS...LOWER GREAT LAKES

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 072035Z - 072300Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...20 PERCENT

SUMMARY...A MARGINAL SEVERE THREAT IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE CNTRL
APPALACHIAN MTNS AND IN THE LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION THIS AFTERNOON.
STRONG GUSTY WINDS WILL BE POSSIBLE AS CELLS INITIATE AND INTENSIFY
OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. WW ISSUANCE APPEARS UNLIKELY DUE TO THE
MARGINAL NATURE OF THE THREAT.

DISCUSSION...LATEST SFC ANALYSIS SHOWS A WELL-DEFINED COLD FRONT
LOCATED FROM CNTRL IND NEWD TO LAKE ERIE. AHEAD OF THE FRONT...AN
AXIS OF LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE IS PRESENT WHERE SFC DEWPOINTS ARE
GENERALLY IN THE MID 60S TO LOWER 70S F. AS SFC TEMPS HAVE WARMED
INTO THE 80S F ALONG THE MOIST AXIS...MODERATE INSTABILITY HAS
DEVELOPED WITH MLCAPE VALUES ESTIMATED IN THE 1000 TO 1500 J/KG
RANGE. IN RESPONSE...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS HAVE INCREASED IN
COVERAGE ALONG THE CORRIDOR OF MODERATE INSTABILITY FROM ERN KY
NNEWD INTO WRN PA AND WRN NY. REGIONAL WSR-88D VWPS ALONG THIS
CORRIDOR SHOW UNIDIRECTIONAL WIND PROFILES WITH 25 TO 35 KT OF WSWLY
FLOW IN THE LOW TO MID-LEVELS...RESULTING IN ABOUT 20 KT OF 0-6 KM
SHEAR. THIS MAY BE ENOUGH FOR MARGINALLY SEVERE WIND GUSTS WITH
MULTICELLS THAT HAVE ACCESS TO LOCALLY MAXIMIZED INSTABILITY LATE
THIS AFTERNOON.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1337
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1027 AM CDT THU JUL 09 2015

AREAS AFFECTED...WV/SOUTHEAST OH INTO WESTERN PA/FAR WESTERN MD

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 091527Z - 091730Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...40 PERCENT

SUMMARY...SEVERE WEATHER INCLUDING THE RISK FOR DAMAGING WINDS AND
POSSIBLY A TORNADO IS EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY INCREASE THROUGH EARLY
AFTERNOON ACROSS WV/FAR SOUTHEAST OH INTO WESTERN PORTIONS OF PA/MD.
MONITORING FOR A POSSIBLE WATCH ISSUANCE AS EARLY AS MIDDAY/EARLY
AFTERNOON ACROSS PARTS OF THE REGION...WITH A WATCH ISSUANCE
BECOMING INCREASINGLY LIKELY WITH EASTWARD EXTENT INTO PA/MD LATER
TODAY.

DISCUSSION...REGIONAL 12Z OBSERVED SOUNDINGS AND MORE CONTEMPORARY
WSR-88D VWP DATA SAMPLE A SEASONALLY STRONG DEEP-LAYER WIND FIELD
OVER THE OH VALLEY...HIGHLIGHTED BY AS MUCH AS 40-50 KT
WEST-SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS WITHIN THE LOWEST 2-5 KM AGL ASSOCIATED
WITH AN EASTWARD-MOVING VORT MAX/MCV. A 1011 MB SURFACE LOW NEAR
LAKE ERIE AT 15Z WILL CONTINUE EASTWARD TODAY WHILE A TRAILING COLD
FRONT ALSO MOVES EASTWARD ACROSS THE MIDDLE/UPPER OH VALLEY.

WITHIN THE PRE-COLD FRONT WARM SECTOR...ONE RELATIVELY LOW-TOPPED
UPDRAFT/THUNDERSTORM HAS ALREADY EXHIBITED GRADUAL SIGNS OF
INTENSIFICATION ACROSS FAR SOUTH-CENTRAL/SOUTHEAST OH AS OF 15Z.
ALTHOUGH SOME CLOUD BILLOWS /IMPLICATIONS OF STABILITY/ STILL
PERSIST AHEAD OF THIS STORM...THE WARM SECTOR ACROSS WV/SOUTHEAST OH
INTO NEARBY SOUTHWEST PA/WESTERN MD CONTINUES TO STEADILY WARM IN
CONJUNCTION WITH LOWER 70S F SURFACE DEWPOINTS. THUS...INCREASING
STORM DEVELOPMENT/INTENSIFICATION IS PROBABLE INTO THE AFTERNOON
INTO WV AND NEARBY PA/MD. A COLLOCATED BELT OF STRENGTHENING WINDS
AND WEAK TO MODERATE BUOYANCY WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR ORGANIZED STORM
MODES INCLUDING FAST-MOVING LINE SEGMENTS/BOWS AND THE POSSIBILITY
OF AT LEAST SOME WEAK/TRANSIENT SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF WIND DAMAGE
AND POTENTIALLY SOME TORNADO RISK.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1339
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1159 AM CDT THU JUL 09 2015

AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS OF PA/MD/WV AND FAR NORTH VA

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...TORNADO WATCH LIKELY

VALID 091659Z - 091900Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...95 PERCENT

SUMMARY...A TORNADO WATCH WILL LIKELY BE NEEDED FOR AN INCREASING
DAMAGING WIND/ISOLATED TORNADO RISK BY MID/LATE AFTERNOON
PARTICULARLY ACROSS CENTRAL/EASTERN PORTIONS OF PA/MD/WV AND
ADJACENT FAR NORTHERN VA.

DISCUSSION...A SURFACE LOW CONTINUES TO SHIFT EASTWARD ACROSS LAKE
ERIE VICINITY TOWARD NORTHERN PA EARLY THIS AFTERNOON...WHILE A
PRECEDING WARM FRONT WILL CONTINUE TO GRADUALLY SPREAD NORTHWARD
ACROSS PA/NJ. UPSTREAM STORMS CURRENTLY ACROSS NORTHERN WV/FAR
SOUTHWEST PA AT 17Z SHOULD FURTHER INCREASE AND POTENTIALLY GROW
UPSCALE OVER TIME...WHILE ADDITIONAL/SEMI-DISCRETE STORMS SHOULD
ALSO DEVELOP/INCREASE JUST AHEAD OF/PERIPHERAL TO THIS ACTIVITY.
INITIAL SIGNS OF THIS MAY ALREADY BE OCCURRING ACROSS CENTRAL PA
COINCIDENT WITH A DEEPENING CU FIELD PER VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY
AMID AN INCREASINGLY UNSTABLE/WEAKLY INHIBITED WARM SECTOR.

ORGANIZED STORM MODES INCLUDING WHAT MAY BE A COMBINATION OF
SEMI-DISCRETE SUPERCELLS AND AN UPSCALE-GROWING CONVECTIVE LINE/BOWS
WILL BE AIDED BY A SEASONALLY STRONG STRENGTHENING BELT OF
LOW/MID-TROPOSPHERIC WEST-SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS AS NOTED IN UPSTREAM
UPPER-AIR OBSERVATIONS. DAMAGING WINDS CAN BE EXPECTED WITH THE
STRONGER STORMS...WITH SOME TORNADO POTENTIAL AS WELL...PARTICULARLY
IN CLOSER PROXIMITY TO THE SURFACE LOW/WARM FRONT ACROSS PA /AND
EVENTUALLY NJ/.

THIS ACTIVITY WILL PROPAGATE SEWD TOWARD THE OH RIVER WITH THE PRIMARY THREAT BEING DAMAGING WINDS. DISCUSSION...BOUNDARY LAYER LAPSE RATES ARE STEEPENING WITHIN CLOUD-FREE CORRIDOR FROM WRN LAKE ERIE...SWWD INTO CNTRL INDIANA. SFC-3KM VALUES ARE NOW IN EXCESS OF 7 C/KM AND FURTHER STEEPENING IS EXPECTED WITH CONTINUED HEATING. SUMMARY...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL POSE A STRONG WIND AND HAIL
THREAT THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM NORTHERN OHIO INTO WESTERN

DISCUSSION...WIDELY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS HAD DEVELOPED ACROSS

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1500
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1153 AM CDT TUE JUL 21 2015

AREAS AFFECTED...PENNSYLVANIA...NEW YORK...VERMONT

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 211653Z - 211800Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...20 PERCENT

SUMMARY...FURTHER INTENSIFICATION OF FRONTAL/PRE-FRONTAL
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY IS POSSIBLE AS IT ADVANCES SOUTHEASTWARD THIS
AFTERNOON. SOME OF THIS MAY BE ACCOMPANIED BY LOCALIZED WIND GUSTS
THAT MAY REMAIN MOSTLY BELOW SEVERE CRITERIA...BUT COULD
NEVERTHELESS RESULT IN SPORADIC DAMAGE OF AND RELATING TO
TREES/NEARBY POWER LINES. A WATCH IS NOT CURRENTLY
ANTICIPATED...BUT TRENDS WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED.

DISCUSSION...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT IS NOW WELL UNDERWAY
TO THE LEE OF THE LOWER GREAT LAKES. LOCALLY ENHANCED LOW-LEVEL
CONVERGENCE ALONG THE LAKE BREEZES AND THE SOUTHEASTWARD ADVANCING
COLD FRONT MAY BE CONTRIBUTING TO THIS ACTIVITY...BUT FORCING
ASSOCIATED WITH A FAIRLY VIGOROUS SHORT WAVE IMPULSE PIVOTING
INTO/THROUGH THE LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION MAY BE MORE PROMINENT.

OVERALL...THE ENVIRONMENT DOES NOT APPEAR PARTICULARLY CONDUCIVE TO
SEVERE STORM DEVELOPMENT GIVEN THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES CHARACTERIZED
BY RATHER WEAK TO MODEST LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC LAPSE RATES AND
CAPE. A 40-50 KT SOUTHWESTERLY 500 MB JET STREAK IS CONTRIBUTING TO
STRONG DEEP LAYER SHEAR...BUT LOW-LEVEL FLOW APPEARS RATHER
WEAK...AND LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC MEAN FLOW IS PROBABLY GENERALLY
ONLY ON THE ORDER OF 30 KT OR LESS.

STILL...WITH ADDITIONAL BOUNDARY LAYER HEATING AND MIXING LIKELY IN
ADVANCE OF THE COLD FRONT AND ASSOCIATED EVOLVING BROKEN CONVECTIVE
LINE...FURTHER INTENSIFICATION OF STORMS DOES SEEM PROBABLE THROUGH
18-21Z...AS ACTIVITY SPREADS THROUGH THE CHAMPLAIN INTO HUDSON
VALLEYS...TOWARD THE CATSKILLS AND POCONOS...AND ACROSS THE
ALLEGHENY MOUNTAINS/ADJACENT AREAS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHWESTERN
PENNSYLVANIA.

  • 1 month later...

I don't know about you guys but this summer has been especially boring for weather.  I can count on one hand the number of thunderstorms we've actually gotten, and two of them were during the very early morning hours.  Quite dry since the end of June.  Good thing June was as wet as it was otherwise we'd have a serious drought issue.

I'm ready for fall at this point.  Heat can be done.  Then it isn't long until winter storm season.
