Special Statement
Statement as of 2:40 PM EDT on March 19, 2015

... High elevation freezing rain expected this afternoon and
evening...

Temperatures have fallen below freezing above about 5000 feet
across the northern mountains. Precipitation will continue off and
on into the evening. Light ice accumulations will be likely...
especially on elevated surfaces. Some slick spots may also develop
on high elevation roads. The chance of freezing rain will diminish
through the evening... as precipitation begins to taper off and
temperatures warm.

Use extra caution if traveling along the highest elevations of the
Blue Ridge Parkway from around Craggy Gardens and points north...
as well as other high elevation roads across the northern
mountains.

Just passing through from ASU and no to both. Rain on both sides...very localized pockets of wintry mix.

Welcome to the board, enjoyed the obs that weren't ridiculously over stated.  You would be shocked at the number of people who would call a flurry or a mix ripping snow.....Was just checking to see lol

Snow started mixing with the rain at around 11am with a temperature of 45. Darndest thing I've ever seen. Sleet began mixing in from 12-3. Temperature fell rapidly from mid 40s down to 36 around 3pm with all sleet under the heavier rates, lasted til about 4pm.

Now back to rain and 38. Interesting day. Wasn't expecting anything frozen.

If you have noticed the small cyclonic flow on the radar today, here is an infrared look at its development from 6PM yesterday to 11AM.

Looking at a longer range loop, it seems like it was developing there for two days.  Last year it seemed that many Atlantic cyclones were generated in tandem (a similar dynamic to how the water rushes away from the shore as a wave approaches) with the eastward movement of large low systems across the continental U.s.

One part of the forecast for tonight will be right... the showers likely after midnight. Seeing as there's hardly any precipitation in NC, and a pretty good void all the way down into GA, that's a given. Expecting them to cut the 60% chance down even more, given the look of current radar.

11:45PM Edit... after midnight is now mainly after 4:00 AM. Tenth to a quarter inch is now less than a tenth.
