StudentOfClimatology
Still, going to need heavy rates to overcome the sun angle. Minus the roads, I don't think it matters too much so long as the thermodynamic environment is safely below freezing. There's only so much the Sun can do when 80% of the surface is snowcovered w/ an antecedent temp in the 20s.
WinterWxLuvr
a key player http://weather.unisys.com/surface/sfc_con.php?image=de&inv=0&t=cur tonight's soundings will be interesting the reason why the south had snow this week were their crazy dp's aloft and down low which still allowed them to get decent snow after reaching mid-40's during the day Thursday night ROA had a dp is -48.5C at the 850 level as 1 example now, it ain't that dry tonight, but I'm sure soundings will show some pretty dry air down the east coast I have serious doubts that most can breach freezing tomorrow....if the precip comes. 87storms
as someone who loves wacky weather, part of me wants a sizable ice storm. that said, not having heat and electricity isn't really something that i can say is very exciting. i drove through a pretty legit ice storm in nc last year and dam near ran out of gas because every gas station in the raleigh/durham area was closed. luckily, there was one near charlotte that was open, or else it would have been a pretty unpleasant situation. ice storms are serious 'ish. i'd rather have snow and sleet. ers-wxman1
For significant ice accretion you need steady light rates with temps less than 30...ideally less than 29.
needbiggerboat
I am flying from HNL to IAD, scheduled to land around 1pm tomorrow. I havent been following the weather until now, but do you think this thing is significant enough to cause airport delays?Yes. Because you must not only focus on IAD but all storm track airports and any flights entering or leaving storm track airports. The entire system takes a hit. Kevin Reilly
Some dp's are already close to that it appears. Dewpoint here In Media Delaware County is currently -3 that's a problem for tomorrow... Baltimore is at 3 above zero. Cold Dry Air and a Pressure Reading of 30.85 this morning to boot.... I would say wintry weather is on the way!! clskinsfan
I am at 21 with a DP of 4. That is a pretty good chunk of moisture to our west heading into this cold air. I would be shocked if I make it above freezing tomorrow. This one may perform better than I was expecting it to.
mattie g
Is that not what the forecasts are showing? Those are just prerequisite conditions. It doesn't mean that every system meeting those requirements will necessarily result in an ice storm. March sun around here can do a number on surfaces, even through cloud cover.
