One big positive about this March is that Maple Sap production has been awesome.   We only have a couple taps but have already made about a gallon of syrup from the sap and the trees are still producing nicely.  Looking at the forecast it may continue for a couple more weeks.

maples flowing here as well.  Also my pine allergies are in overdrive and the trees are looking a brighter color of green too.  Spring is an awesome time, watching nature wake up all refreshed.

you know those people that say "snow is pretty but..." and hate everything about winter? Im that person with spring. Nature coming to life is pretty, and makes for some good photo ops, but my allergies are terrible and overall I hate spring lol.

Can't say it will work for you two but I have recently been taking RAW Unfilitered Honey daily it has helped with my allergies.  I also take Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar.  These together have helped me significantly heathwise ... I am now totally off all Allergy & GERD meds.

Noticed some trees/bushes are starting to leaf out after the mild temps recently.

It's mostly confined to the more hardy silver maples, but have seems some others as well.

Zero signs of spring here... besides the lack of snow, which isn't completely gone get.

I drink a lot of hot honey and lemon water in winter, helps sort of keep from getting sick (or taming it), so Im all for trying honey to level my allergies!

Yep! Woke up to 0.5" on the ground here!  Ol' man winter decided to leave a deposit on its' last night (astronomically). Nice little stat padder that will be melted by 10 AM.

By the way Tim, I saw that you are moving and I know that you don't post much in the summer, so good luck on the move.

0.5"...not bad. I've so checked out of weather lately, that I didn't know snow was even a possibility with this one.

LAF spat out a few UP obs, but I didn't see anything.

You're moving?  I must have missed that.  Where you heading?

There's one little pile of snow left that survived the great torch of March 16th out front.  It's about 2-3ft tall.  At one point it was a massive 8-10ft pile 10-15ft long and wide.

An absolute beautiful first day of Spring.  Noticed yesterday the Yellow Dog River by my house had opened up in a few spots so to celebrate the the new season, I kayaked for the first time this year. It was a little chilly to start but temps warmed into the mid 30's pretty quick.  Back to Winter tonight and tomorrow 3-5" in the forecast.  Possibly a bigger snow system next week.  Winter not quite over yet.

A few pics from my yak

Blooming? Ground is rock hard here. There's still snow otg in shady hillside areas.

Yep. The ground is still frozen in spots, but for the most part it's workable now on the top few inches.

But you know, Crocuses bloom in the snow a lot, it isn't unusual for them to bloom while the ground is still very cold or frozen. They stick their heads up during the usual January thaw and just wait for the first warm-ish stretch.

It does look like we finally get into an active pattern mid-late next week.

There doesn't look to be anything really major on the table right now, although the latest model runs have begun to hint at the possibly of a strong Lakes Cutter / Apps Runner / Coastal storm...

This sure would have been something to witness. 80-90 mph non-thunderstorm winds in SEMI.

Also on March 21, 1913, powerful winds swept across Southeast Michigan as a strong cold front moved across the state. The wind storm was one of the strongest in the local climate record and caused widespread damage, countless injuries, and several fatalities.

According to the historical record, east winds gusting to around 30 mph during the pre-dawn hours turned to the south, allowing the temperature in Detroit to rise to 57 degrees by 9 a.m. With the passage of the cold front, temperatures fell precipitously through the day, reaching a low of 23 degrees by midnight. As the cold air first began spilling into the area, winds initially turned southwesterly and began gusting to over 60 mph between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. The average wind speed during the following hour increased to 71 mph with a peak gust of nearly 80 mph. Shortly thereafter, at 11:15 a.m., a peak wind gust of 86 mph was recorded. Altogether, winds gusted in excess of 70 mph for approximately 3 hours while gusts in excess of 60 mph continued for around 6 hours.

Damage was significant, widespread, and conservatively estimated at $500,000 (equivalent to $11,500,000 in 2012 dollars after adjusting for inflation). Buildings were razed, roofs and chimneys were destroyed, and trees were broken and uprooted. In addition, vehicles were overturned and there were accounts of a delivery wagon having been blown through the window of a restaurant on Lafayette Boulevard. In addition to several fatalities, one of which included a Grand Trunk watchman who was blown in front of a moving train, injuries to pedestrians were numerous and included arm, leg, and skull fractures. The strong winds also caused the Detroit River level to fall so low that the water intakes for manufacturing plants were cut off, resulting in their closure. On the Canadian side, thirteen freight train cars were derailed by large waves.

Yeah crocuses are almost a mid to late winter flower, even here in the north

There are still snow piles in parking lots but other than that its just brown grass, salt-stained roads, and the usual debris from a long winter. All of the gravel and garbage that you dont notice when snow is being plowed unfortunately dont melt with the snow lol
