SchaumburgStormer
Seems like I always miss the lights on the rare occasion they get down here. Luckily I have cyclones great photos to tide me over.
snowstormcanuck
^Thanks Indy. One more from tonight for good measure. Beautiful. Wish I had seen it first hand. And what an apropos colour for St. Patrick's day.
Thunder Road
Our resident expert photographer got this: He was thrilled that we got to see some faint pillars (off to the right) since we ended up getting into good viewing position once the storm was already petering out pretty quickly. Thundersnow12
The GFS/GEM/Euro have hinted at a wave running along the baroclinic zone with some advection/overrunning snows in parts of the Midwest. The GFS has been the quicker model and has shown a nice swath from ND to northwest IA to central IL and the Euro has the swath further north running through srn WI/northern IL. Hoosier
Great photos of the lights. Based on reports, I'm guessing they may have been visible here but I never went out.
Hoosier
Wow, 46/0 at Gary right now. I'm not sure about that dewpoint though as it's quite a bit less than surrounding areas.
michsnowfreak
I've been posting some stats about the dry weather in the Chicago record watch thread but haven't checked Detroit. Do you happen to know what the record is for dry stretches at this time of year or all-time?I will look into it later. Theres no quick way to do it by individual month on xmacis so I will tinker around with some data later. Im curious myself

Do you happen to know what the record is for dry stretches at this time of year or all-time? This isnt a stat but I looked it up...DTW hasnt had measurable plain rain since 0.03" fell Jan 18th!!! (and that was a mix as it is). That is crazy. Everything has been frozen.
cyclone77
Thanks everyone. Here's a full sized version of the above here. https://www.flickr.com/photos/jwright77/16663203828/in/photostream/lightbox/ Only 49 for a high today. Almost 30 degrees cooler than Monday. Chinook
Wow, 46/0 at Gary right now. I'm not sure about that dewpoint though as it's quite a bit less than surrounding areas. I think the Gary ASOS was reporting bad dew points. They had a dew point of 66 just after that, which is impossible! michsnowfreak
DTW - longest stretches of consecutive days without measurable precip in March. 25 days Mar 4 - 28, 1889 22 days Mar 10 - 31, 1999 17 days Mar 15 - 31, 1918 16 days Mar 2 - 17, 1905 15 days Mar 4, 2015 - PRESENT (thru Mar 18) 13 days Mar 21 - Apr 2, 1910 13 days Mar 12 - 24, 2009 Another interesting note....if March ended with no more precipitation, it would rank as the driest March on record (currently 0.32" has fallen, the current driest Mar is 0.38" in 1910). However....we arent even CLOSE to record lows in snow. The current snowfall of 2.8" would tie for the 34th least snowy March

weatherbo
Beautiful late Winter day today. Of course I snowshoe'd my property and crossed over into some public land. Saw plenty of evidence of bears waking up. I saw a lot of scat and some tracks in the snow as well. Temps topped out in the upper 20's, so being out only required a light jacket. Days like today are priceless.

They went from -19C dew point to 19C dew point. I think both were wrong. It looks like manual observations, note the lack of remarks. As for the dewpoint, my guess is the instrument they are using to measure it is running a bit dry. The 19c dewpoint is an error in the manual observation. Would be nice if there was some sort of "streak finder" option for this kind of stuff but I don't know of one. Would make things easier.
Hoosier
I get the feeling that might happen at this rate. Long range is looking a little more active...not that that is hard to do given how things have been recently. Probably going to take some creative dancing to avoid precip the rest of the month. OHweather
That's awesome Cyclone!! Perfect viewing conditions here, but some other met majors drove to an open rural area outside of Athens and didn't see a thing, so it sounds like they weren't visible here. Geos
Gorgeous northern lights pictures! At one point I saw a faint green glow on the northern horizon last night, but it was subtle. Much better viewing away from the city lights for sure. 47° for today. Not too bad of a day for mid-March. Would like to see some rain though. Hoosier
The recent warmth, though not long lasting or featuring many days of extreme positive anomalies, took a pretty big bite out of the negative anomalies that had built up this month.
