coastalplainsnowman
Look at that stretch from 1980 - 1990. Those were the days when seeing this area in even the bright white 3-6 on TWC was enough to get the adrenaline going, 6-12 was almost unprecedented, and 12+ pretty much never happened. 24-36? If that happened back then I probably wouldn't have survived just seeing the map. Blizzard of 83 got me hooked but didn't see anything remotely close to it til 1996. SnoSki14
It just shows we've been spoiled rotten. Just look at the last 15 years compared to the 80s and most of the 90s.
Guest Pamela
It just shows we've been spoiled rotten. Just look at the last 15 years compared to the 80s and most of the 90s. The 50's, 70's, 80's & 90's were anomalously non snowy. Prior to that, snowstorms were a good deal more common. Its not out of the question that the current regime (2001- 2015) is more in step with what is "normal" than those four cited decades. Even the 90's hinted at a return to a snowier pattern...with 1993-94 & 1995-96.

I think it is often forgotten what a minor shift in climate it would take to substantially increase (or decrease) the average annual snowfall around here. Being intensely temperature dependent, snowfall in these parts is highly variable. However, we do know that there is an extremely steep gradient regarding annual averages in our backyard...as evinced by the rapid increase as one heads north up into CT and upstate NY. Thus, a slight cooling / shift south & east by the general storm track would likely play a significant role in augmenting the annual averages in NYC. Sn0waddict
Damn no 6+ inch snowstorm at all between 1996-2000? Thankfully I was too young to be the snow enthusiast I am now. And people have already said this, but the late 80's.. could only imagine what it would be like around here if we had to go through that (we probably will again at some point). JBG
The compilation is excellent. I have a pretty good memory and the only one I don't remember was 8.9 on 2/26-27/1991. That doesn't mean it didn't happen. It just shows we've been spoiled rotten. Just look at the last 15 years compared to the 80s and most of the 90s. The 50's, 70's, 80's & 90's were anomalously non snowy. From my memory the start of "snow futility" was right after the New Year's Day storm in 1971. 1971-2 was every bit as bad as the record snowless winter, 1972-3 since almost all the storms either melted immediately or worse were 70% taint. Until the two-year resumption of snows in 1977-8, the figures don't do justice. The one storm in 1975 was surrounded by extremely mild weather. The 1973-4 spate of storms, being in a record La Niña also melted out between storms. April 6, 1982, I'll admit, was fun, with thundersnow. Megalopolis in February 1983 was a one-trick wonder. Even the December 26, 1990 storm was a "front-end thump" ahead of a SWFE and ended with temperatures approaching 60 the next day. As I said I don't even remember the late February 1991 storm. Since those days I walked to work I would expect to have remmembered it. Prior to that, snowstorms were a good deal more common. Its not out of the question that the current regime (2001- 2015) is more in step with what is "normal" than those four cited decades. Even the 90's hinted at a return to a snowier pattern...with 1993-94 & 1995-96.Your lipst to G-d's ears, though there were lengthy snow droughts in the late 1920's and early 1930's. I suspect you're right though that our average 24" snows are comprised of mostly decent, 30+ inch winters, averaged down by, say, two or so snowless winters per decade. JBG
And the 2/13-14/2014 12.5" storm. That storm made Famartin's original post but for some reason not Uncle's quote of the post. The contrast between the type and the color of the margin isn't good. nice list...it has the 6.2" from 12/23-24/1961 that's not in the local climate data...I think, also, the last two storms in 1948-9 actually happened in 1947-8. I have read books on other subjects taht reference those two storms. I also recall reading media coverage of the March 1956 storms to the effect that the mid-December 1948 storm was the last major one until March 1956. I also think the one storm in 1953-4 didn't happen.

famartin
I got 5.6" for 12/31-1/1/1948-49 in Central Park... Hmm, yeah that one looks suspect. The NCDC data has holes in that period too. Could be an error.
North and West of Town
Damn no 6+ inch snowstorm at all between 1996-2000? Thankfully I was too young to be the snow enthusiast I am now. And people have already said this, but the late 80's.. could only imagine what it would be like around here if we had to go through that (we probably will again at some point). Believe me, it was no fun - 1990 to 1993, and then 1997 to 2000. No fun if you and your best friend in grade school and then high school only had the weather channel to depend upon prior to 2000. Over a foot on most of LI and I think close to a foot at JFK (Idlewild aka IDL ) I wanted to say KIDL, but I doubt the prefix was in use then. danstorm
What would be pretty interesting to me would be a distribution of % snowfalls in the historical record that fell between 0-30 inches, binned by inch, for the major I-95 cities.
