LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
AN UPPER TROUGH AND ARCTIC FRONT WILL APPROACH WED EVENING.
THE FRONT WILL MOVE ACROSS WED NIGHT ACCOMPANIED BY SCT SNOW
SHOWERS. THEN A STRONG VORT MAX ROUNDING THE BASE OF THE UPPER
TROUGH STILL TO THE WEST SHOULD INDUCE CYCLOGENESIS S OF CAPE GOD
LATE WED NIGHT INTO THU MORNING. MODELS HINT AT EITHER AN INVERTED
TROUGH EXTENDING NW OF THE LOW OR INTERACTION BETWEEN THE LOW AND
ARCTIC FRONT THAT COULD BRING A CHANCE FOR A STEADY ACCUMULATING
LIGHT SNOW THU MORNING...MAINLY ACROSS CENTRAL/ERN SECTIONS OF SRN
CT AND LONG ISLAND
. THE UPPER TROUGH MAY ALSO SPARK ISOLD SNOW
SHOWERS FARTHER WEST AS IT MOVES ACROSS THU INTO THU EVENING.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
WED/WED NIGHT...FAIR WEATHER WILL START THE DAY AS HIGH PRESSURE WILL
BE ACROSS THE AREA. CONDITIONS WILL CHANGE DURING THE DAY AS THE
APPROACHING UPPER TROUGH AND AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT APPROACH FROM
THE WEST. WE HAVE INCREASED POPS FOR THE NRN/WRN AREAS FOR THE
AFTERNOON AND THE SRN/ERN AREAS FOR THE EVENING. THE COLD FRONT
WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY SNOW SQUALLS AND GUSTY WINDS WHICH MAY
DEPOSIT A QUICK INCH OF SNOW IN MANY AREAS. TEMPERATURES WILL DROP
INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS OVERNIGHT
. WIND CHILLS DROP BELOW ZERO
ACROSS THE AREA WITH -10 TO -20 FAR NORTH AND 0 TO -10 FROM THE
LEHIGH VALLEY S AND E.

I'm just an amateur weather observer, but I'd like to say in this thread that I find arctic fronts as amazing. Here in/on central LI, we had a couple of these come through this season. My fascination begins with my basic understanding of cold fronts. cold air bumps warm air, and obvious convection results in a slim line of powerful energy/ thunderstorms or just heavy rain.

What seems baffling to me is that the arctic fronts that ran into this area recently have done so into really cold air yet there were these lines of heavy yet brief snowfall, followed by bitter cold.

My question is how is there such convection in such cold conditions? I'm going to guess upper air something, but it is an amazing phenomenon observed here on the surface.
