vortex95
There has been a lot of talk recently how two blizzards in one season have never occurred in BOS. As far as I can tell, this is incorrect from looking at Logan Airport's historical obs. The two storms Jan-Feb 1978 were, and the two storms Dec 2010 and Jan 2011 were as well. I looked at the raw obs for Logan and they prove it. 1/4 VIS or less in BLSN and winds gusts at least 35 mph (31 kt) for three straight hours. That is the definition! See below. You can check it all yourself. Also, point specific for blizzards is spiting hairs. What if Logan Airport just falls short of blizzard criteria, but airports on the S Shore/Cape Cod meet criteria? An example, I can think of offhand....Cape Cod had two blizzards in two weeks...one late Jan 1987, and then another in early Feb 1987. BOS area just got fringed. Point specific IMHO is needlessly narrow and used to hype things more than they should be. Total snowfall for a storm has nothing to do with blizzard criteria.
