Extreme cold February 2015

Taking the point and click at its word, Detroit is going to end up with around an average of 14.5 for the month. That would be the coldest February in 140 years and the coldest month since January of 1977. The departure would be a -13.6, which would just about match the Morch departure, just in the opposite direction.

Gorgeous outside. The snow is glistening in the frigid sunshine. Not sure what the low as at DTW but its been -4F the  last two hours, so we will not break todays record (-8F) however it is definitely 2nd place for cold today (old 2nd place was -2F). However its looking like a record low on Thursday and Friday is a near lock, which would put us at 6 record lows for February (5 record lows, 1 record low min).

In the winter season of 2013-14 we set 8 daily record lows (5 record lows, 3 record low mins)...and it looks like we will be setting at least 6 record lows this winter (5 record lows, 1 record low min). No record highs were set either of the last two winters.

I was telling my wife that this morning - likely to go below zero Thursday in RFD and I wager we're done with sub zero for winter 2014/15. Stranger things have happened in the last two years but as we burn another week or two even with the current pattern there's a lot working against it at this point in the year.

yep

Ran the numbers for ORD, and if the current forecast holds true...this February will just miss being the coldest on record.

I plugged in the expected numbers for CLE through the end of the month. If all goes as forecast CLE will end the month at 13.9 degrees and easily coldest February on record.

1. 13.9 2015 projected

2. 15.2 1875

3. 16.7 1978

There's plenty of buffer room in case the week trends warmer too.

Very impressive. It would also be the second coldest month on record for Cleveland too, only behind the 11.0˚ from January 1977.

I was out walking and it was very painful! One of the coldest feeling airmass' in a very long time. Only 8 minutes, whole face frozen and you could feel the bite with that breeze of -31ºC!! I couldn't believe how bad it was, I wouldn't even take a 4 minute journey out there...

Felt more like -36ºC, and I see the humidity is at 70%...I bet the damp nature of this is causing it to feel the worst yet. It wasn't so bad in the daytime if your facing the right direction, but now its brutal. This morning's winds will be gusting to 60 km/h...its uncommon to see that while its below -15ºC so that will be unbearable.

Grayling is -30 with a -39 dewpoint. Now that is incredible.

Hope no one is repairing/doing PC stuff without an anti-static wrist strap.

YYZ broke the old record low of -2.9F yesterday set back in 1972. I think the new record for yesterday is around -6.3 to -6.7F (-21.3C to -21.5C). Numbers don't come out till after 1:00am.  It will likely break today's (Feb 24) record as well which is again -2.9F set back in 1993. Currently sitting at -4.3F (-20.2C) at YYZ.

Edit: Also the last time the temperature was above freezing at YYZ and Toronto was Jan 24. About 30 days now, lol. Most consecutive days below freezing is 46 set back in 1977 I believe. 1978 is second at 41.
