NorthShoreWx
Drove along the north fork this morning. Large sections of bay that were open in yesterday's satellite photo were frozen this morning. The low temperature in Smithtown was +3.5F at 5:00am. doncat
When your cold outbreak may compare to the one 81 years ago , I think that`s pretty EPIC .Been keeping records here since 1977...coldest February was 1979, with the coming cold this week could be close to that year...have to see how the last week turns out...Monday morning.... uncle W
this will be the first time since records have been kept in Central Park when both January and February averaged in the 20's after a December averaging in the 40's...this mid to late February cold wave will rival 1914, 1896, 1958, 1979...the first three had great March's while 1979 had a mild March... Morris
This is far more exciting than the non-existent snow. What do the 0z models show for tomorrow night?
doncat
Temp here at midnight was 24 so that will be the high for the day...too bad the cold air didn't rush in a little sooner before midnight like places just to our west...with temps not rising today some spots could see high temps of 10-15 degrees for the day...would think that's a record for so late in the month. Chaser25973
When was the last time the lower Hudson River froze over? I have an amazing view of the Hudson with sheets of ice reaching from Manhattan towards Jersey.

pazzo83
Going to be tough for the park with temps approaching 20 now (18, up from 14 earlier). We needed to be in the low teens now to probably have a shot at 0.

They used to have an ice fair on the Hudson during the little ice age. I would recommend walking on it now

Oh yeah for sure. Allot of the ice comes down the river from upstate where it's insanely cold. And I meant I wouldn't recommend walking on it!! I have an amazing view of the Hudson with sheets of ice reaching from Manhattan towards Jersey. Ice floes caused quite a bit of damage to the docks and pilings on the Hudson back in 2004 and 2005. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/07/nyregion/breaking-the-ice-can-be-a-river-hazard.html http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/19/nyregion/19boat.html?n=Top%2FReference%2FTimes%20Topics%2FPeople%2FB%2FBloomberg%2C%20Michael%20R. pazzo83
People forget how cold that cold air outbreak of 1994 really was. Yea in the Shenandoah Valley in VA, we got down to about -15 to -20, parts of the state came close to setting the STATE all time record low. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_North_American_cold_wave DCA had a HIGH of 8F. Pittsburgh got down to -21 and Columbus to -22. Parts of KY down to the mid -30s? Yea, we haven't seen anything like this outbreak since. I also remember an outbreak in 1996 when parts of MN and ND had windchills approaching -100.
SnowGoose69
The record at NYC tomorrow is 1 in 1888 although the nam mos shows them getting there I doubt it. Record lows start to increase notably after tomorrow so I think they have a shot at a record on the 20th-22nd which are 7 5 and 8 respectively

pazzo83
It's amazing how much stronger the sun gets as we move through Feb. If this were mid Jan, or even very early Feb, we'd probably be stuck around 10F in full sun. We would have definitely gotten close to 0 in that scenario.
