doncat
The cold continues...looks like most of us will see single digit lows again on Mon(late), Tues, Thurs and Fri...Even more amazing considering the time of year.
JBG
Given the overall urbanization and increase in the heat dome in the Greater NY / NJ area over the last 80 years...the 19.9 F in 1934 is no more impressive than the current 23.7 F here in 2015. That 1934 record was heavily abetted by a night when it fell to -15 F...which was a unique circumstance that probably could not be replicated today.Remember also that February 1934 was during a depression and before suburbanization to the north of the city. I bet, though, that if we replicaterd meteorolical conditions for February 9, 1934 we'd hit -9 or -10.
JBG
Through 2/20 NYC is 23.7 and -10.8. Top 5 coldest Februaries in NYC 19.9....1934 22.7....1885 24.1....1895 24.8....1905 25.2....1875 I'm surprised 1979 didn't make the list. Will we hit a record for combined Januuary/February? NorthShoreWx
-2 at 5AM this morning (Smithtown 2/21). That is the lowest here during our 20 years in this house. Had a few zeros over the years, but it took forever to crack it.
Mophstymeo
Driving over Paerdegate Bay on the Belt on Friday, I saw that a good portion of the waterway was frozen over and snow-covered. I've never seen that.

CIK62
Avg. at CPK now 23.7degs. or -11.0 for month to date. Last week of month should average near 22-23degs. itself. We should end month at 23.0-24.0 and in second or third place since 1869. Even going back to 1822(Governor's Island, Coast Guard records) there are just 6 other Februarys that rival this Feb. SnoSki14
We are just hitting these extreme weather points left and right nowadays. It's amazing that today may be the only day we crack climo and we may fall short. It looks sneakily cold tomorrow night where we might get down to 0 again. I've never seen a subzero low on the table this late in the season.
MJO812
My low tomorrow night is forecasted to be 4. With snowcover, it might be lower. That's awesome Snow88! Can I use that for my new record low graphic? Sure

Superstorm93
Why the heck is it 48 when the forecasted high was 37?? (Rhetorical question) And somehow we're supposed to drop back into the teens. EDIT: It has to be a mistake. There's a station a half a mile away reporting 42 degrees. +SNfreak21
So much for not cracking 40F. You were spot on with yesterdays post, there is no way it would stay in the 30's with near 0 C temps at 850mb with a blazing late Feb sunshine and westerly winds, I knew NWS would bust
