ILoveWinter
One of those nights. Temps in mid teens much of the island, except westhampton, already at 2. Why do the Hamptons drop so rapidly and to such low temps compared to other areas on LI?
F5TornadoF5
There are other places on the island in the single digits as well but not near westhampton. I've heard that it's due to the low elevation and cold air sinks from surrounding areas.

Isotherm
Brutal cold out there. Down to 3.1F here already. Hoping to beat my -0.7F from a couple mornings ago. I need to get below -1.6F to beat my low from last winter, and I think around there in Jan 2011 as well.

bluewave
Those are some old records....made it to +5 here this morning...month at 21.7 degrees as of yesterday. I believe the only other -10 or lower temperature departure months in NYC since the 1970's were December 1989 and January 1977. Just goes to show how rare an occurrence this extreme cold is especially in February that has been on the milder side since 1979.

Top 5 coldest Februaries in NYC 19.9....1934 22.7....1885 24.1....1895 24.8....1905 25.2....1875 Given the overall urbanization and increase in the heat dome in the Greater NY / NJ area over the last 80 years...the 19.9 F in 1934 is no more impressive than the current 23.7 F here in 2015. That 1934 record was heavily abetted by a night when it fell to -15 F...which was a unique circumstance that probably could not be replicated today. Its like a batter who hits .380 in a league where everyone hits .300...its like so what...but if you hit .380 in a league where the average hitter bats .250...that is impressive. Guest Pamela
WSO Upton, whose records date back to the 1940's...has a mean temperature of 17.93 F through the first 20 days this month. The coldest month on record at Upton was January 1977...which had mean temperature of 19.5 F...a full 1.5 degrees warmer than the current month. These statistics are sufficiently illustrative to demonstrate the magnitude of this cold spell. http://www.bnl.gov/w...lyMeanTemps.htm http://mesonet.agron...network=NY_COOP

It looks like average 30 year February temperature in 1934 was 30.6 degrees. So this cold now is very impressive in that the current monthly mean has risen to 35.3 degrees. Isotherm
Wow, the coldest I've recorded since living here: -4.9F. Incredible. Destroys the other cold lows I've had since 2007. Coldest temp ever for my area was -20F in Feb 1934. Hard to believe. Looking at the records for Freehold, 8 days in Feb had lows colder than -5, and 7 days in January had lows under -5. So this definitely looks to be in the top 20 coldest mornings on record here.

At this point in time, the deviation from "normal" using the 1901-30 baseline for 1934 and the 1981-10 one for 2015 is essentially the same. February 1934 was 10.75° below the February average for 1901-30.
uncle W
February averaged 32.3 for the 1920's, 30's and 40's...so far since 1990 NYC is averaging around 35.5 for February...three degrees higher than the 1920's to 40's period...forecasts from noaa and accuwx for the rest of the month look like February could end up averaging around 23.5... bluewave
The general 500 mb pattern this February is close to the reanalysis of 1934. It has been very rare to get a -EPO/+PNA/+AO pattern here in February or any other winter month with a deep trough in the East locking in the extreme cold.
