You can have a raging El Nino...a double La Nina...or Three French Hens...and climatology will still be the controlling factor with regards to who gets the most snow.   These variations of the atmosphere certainly may tweak the totals in one direction or another...but snowy places are still gonna snow...and non snowy places probably won't.

I've heard some areas in America average more snow than other areas...its called climatology...and, try as one might...you cannot fight it. Its also not an accident or luck. Mt Washington still gets more snow...much, much, much more than Dulles Airport...even if we have suppression down to Miami...

You are correct .....

I don't get people's infatuation with Boston. They average more than us and we are not catching them , people have to stop judging every storm against what they are going to get. Who cares.

It's over , they won this one. There have been many an El Niño winters where Boston just crushed cities to its south in terms of snowfall

So please stop mentioning Boston and stop looking for the next storm to be the one that will somehow get you closer to their snowfall totals to make you feel better.

You are not catching Boston .

season average in two weeks and you still have to talk people down

I'm really rather good at it...I've gotten dozens of people to step back from ledges and choose an alternative...

Well said...I LOVE SNOW...but would not WANT that much SNOW just a dangerous situation unfolding there IMO

Boston averages around a foot of snow more than NYC. Not 50".

The whole "it's climatology" excuse doesn't explain that.

Everyone understands we aren't catching them. It's not a race. But you'd be hard pressed to find any precedent to the disparity currently occurring.

Oh sure you would....1992-93...almost 100 inches at Logan...almost 25 inches at NYC.

I mean the actual, real averages are probably 43 Logan; 29 Central Park...so that's just shy of 150%...anytime you have such a disparity...you can have a lopsided season...things do not fall into tight little packets...it will not be 150% of the NYC average *all* the time...

The "snow race" aspect has a lot of entertainment value and appeals to the competitor (or gambler) in us.  I don't have a problem with it.  I like seeing the weenies in other regions get a lot of snow.  I like it even more in my backyard and when my area gets more snow (when we "beat" them).  Just don't kick the other guy when he's down.

We shouldn't take this stuff seriously, but we know that a lot of people still do, so why make them bleed?

The last 14 years both Boston and NYC have been anomalously snowy...the comparative percentages are about the same...but the actual raw numerical difference is greater...simply because soo much snow has fallen.

Total Snowfall
2000-01 through 2013-14 (Last 14 Years)

Boston / Logan Airport: 679.8 inches / average 48.56 inches
New York City / Central Park: 467.5 inches / average 33.39 inches

Fresh in my mind is a post you made on this very topic years ago...went something along the lines of...BWI gets more than National...they deal with it...NYC gets more than BWI...they deal with it...Waterbury, CT gets more than NYC...they deal with it...Kevin gets more than Mt Washington...

I believe the race that year was between Valdez, Tolland and McLean, VA ;)

PS, While I am sympathetic to the race, that does not extend to exaggerating measurements.

i understand what is being said about climo, but those of us in western zones while having done somewhat better recently, are not experiencing anything extraordinary according to climo ( ive had the same amount of snow in 2.5 wks that i had in the same amount of time last feb), furthermore depths out here are great but nothing extraordinary and have been up to a foot higher in recent winters. still many of us are looking for a storm to settle the score or give us something really special so we can remember that it wasnt just epic for worcester to boston. yes they are in a better snow spot but its getting ridiculous

I agree with this. Ever since the predicted great blizzard of 2015 two weeks ago...that was supposed to give me 24-36 inches (and left me with 4.5), I have felt off keel. I feel like I have been chasing that rush and feel we need at least one biggie to make things right!

Western areas have been screwed for years...my vacation house in the Poconos at 1600' elevation hasn't had a huge winter in years...though the snowpack is getting pretty deep there this season.

Nzucker is right, I have a place in poconos at 1900 ft and they've been screwed for years. The place averages over 70" a year climatologically, but have been nickled and dimed to their averages lately if that. I've talked to folks about 3-4' Snowstorms of the past, but haven't seen a real big winter yet. So much so that a guy that I talk to up there that has been living there awhile said oh you get more snow down on the coast right?

Oh sure you would....1992-93...almost 100 inches at Logan...almost 25 inches at NYC.

83.9" at Logan. 24.5" NYC. It isn't as common as you think.

Since 1891, when Logan started records (125 years), there have only been 6 years where Boston had more than 50" and was more than 200% over NYC's total.

1937-38 50.6" to 15.1"

1970-71 57.3" to 15.5"

1992-93 83.9 to 24.5"

1996-97 51.9" to 10.0"

2007-08 51.2" to 11.9"

And of course:

2014-15 77.3" to 20.1"

This is only the second year where Boston is over 70" and NYC is less than a third of that. I call that a pretty unusual occurrence.

I mean the actual, real averages are probably 43 Logan; 29 Central Park...so that's just shy of 150%...anytime you have such a disparity...you can have a lopsided season...things do not fall into tight little packets...it will not be 150% of the NYC average *all* the time...

Yes, 150%. It's not 284%

Agreed. I'm speaking in percentages.

BTW it is not an excuse...its a fact.

Yes, it's a fact, but it does not explain the disparity. There is always a storm that hits them and not us, but nothing like this 2.5 week stretch. It is historic.

Since this has become nothing but banter - might as well state this. For those of us in Central Jersey, we have definitely not seen anywhere near seasonal averages. I dont have my list this year but I cannot recall us seeing over 15 inches yet. Still itching for a storm.

New Brunswick has 14.8

I have 18.2 here in Edison so far...we avg about 23. The poster from metuchen who is a trained spotter I believe has 17-18 so far. Not great but much better then a goose egg. We have had snow cover for a while now.
