Winter Banter Thread - Part 2

People take their climo and snow totals personally here though, so "attacking" those is like attacking the person. I always find it funny how some attribute personal characteristics to how much snow they get. Look at how crazy the IMBYism here among some. I made the mistake of poking the North Shore hornet nest last week talking about the last storm. People take these things way too seriously.

I assume you don't mean me, but it was clear you were already at your breaking point when I (in a subtlly passive aggressive, yet basically polite way ;) ) disagreed with you

The thing about that that bothers me, is that I believe some cook the books to prove their points.  That is a huge no-no in a scientific area and it is rampant on these boards.  There is not much you can do about that, but it sucks.

Excellent point. It's very obvious many on here are not scientific in their record keeping and observations. There are some that I swear if they see more than 100 snowflakes falling at once they are screaming "HEAVY snow here!!!!!" and don't get me started on the eyeball measurements.  It doesn't take long to figure those posters out though.

Edit: I'd prefer folks learn more about the weather and take those things more serious but the overall atmosphere could be more lighthearted, IMO.

I didn't mean you, and what I said might have come across the wrong way also, but it makes me laugh when I see posts accusing X of favoring inland areas or Y of ignoring another area, when we're all just hobbyists anyway wanting to obtain information and discuss our hobby. None of us besides red taggers are paid to do this every day, so it baffles me why some take what another hobbyist says (or what the poster is perceived as saying) about their location so seriously.

this has to be one of nyc's best comeback winters. 40+ looks like a lock for most of the airports

There have only been 4 seasons with less than 2" before Jan 1 and more the 40" on the season.

1906-07: 1.3" before, 53.2" total

1977-78: 0.6" before, 50.7" total

1895-96: 0.3" before, 46.3" total

1913-14: 1.6" before, 40.5" total

2014-15: 1.2" before, 33.2" before today so far.

I know it's probably obvious, but all 4 of those years had at least 6" in March and 3 had over 13".

I don't have stats for comebacks in late January. We had 3.2" before 1/24.

Its not much different from sports...when people talk about "their" team...and relate the team's won / lost record to their own personal success (though rarely their failure)...i.e. "we won the championship".  Why does this occur?  Because life is fairly humdrum for most; and by having something to focus on and hope for...the winter snow season very much provides a center for their life...as demonstrated by the many hours so many spend on this board from November through March.  When that center is questioned or fails to live up to expectations, the individual can become quite melancholy and even defensive over the littlest of things.

Suburban areas are much more likely to see good March snow...March is historically an "elevation month" for snow...most parts of Northern NJ and Westchester & Fairfield Counties which are over the 500' elevation contour average at least 9 or 10 inches of snow in March.

The fact that I don't get so blue anymore when it doesn't work out plays into the fact that my focus has shifted on to other things...Notice?
