vortex95
This is an excellent article. Our wx records over time show "inflation" due to changing technology, understanding, and measurement practices. Snow measurement is not immune, and there are some very good points here that I was not aware of before. http://www2.ucar.edu/atmosnews/perspective/14009/snowfall-measurement-flaky-history This doesn't mean recent years haven't been very snowy, but relatively speaking, it is not so much a deviation from the norm as it seems at first look. Unquestionably, snowfall is among the most inexact parameter when it comes to measuring the weather. Compare to temperature, dew point, wind, and pressure. It used to be in the 90s that the average number of named storms in the Atlantic was 10. Now it is 12, and it is probably 13-14 in reality. The average number of tornadoes in the U.S now is about 1250. You look back prior to 1990, and only two years had counts above 1000! Same "issue" here.
