Upton has upped totals.  Earlier it was 4-6 now 6-10.

* TIMING...HEAVY SNOW THIS MORNING WILL CHANGE TO A MIXTURE OF
SNOW...SLEET...AND FREEZING RAIN...AND THEN WILL CHANGE BACK TO

It seems that the mix line arrived in the city right alongside with the heaviest band. Is it a sad coincidence or is the heaviest band fake and just reflecting the mixing line.

It's not a coincidence...the mix line represents the 850mb warm front in most cases, so there is increased frontogenesis ahead of that boundary.

 

Also, the heavy echoes on radar are usually bright-banding from sleet...that's why you see the yellow where it is mixing, because sleet reflects the radar beam more and causes the precipitation to show up as heavier.

Thanks :)  I figured it should be the reflection of sleet but the yellow band wasn't there (or not as well developed) before it approached the city so I thought it might be something else. Ps. Based on how that band is proceeding the mix line really slowed down and stalling right above the boroughs now.
