Sort of off topic but most of the general public doesn't know the difference between sleet, hail or freezing rain. Most assume it's all the same thing.

Being where we are, it is very difficult to get freezing rain situations on the south shore and east end. So when it does happen, it is a complete and total disaster. People can be warned about it and they just ignore the warnings. I have spoken to several people already today about the possibility of ice accumulation and the basic response was "yeah right".

Upton woke up, now Mt. Holly nees to, as they still have my high being 40F on the point/click.  We're at 30F with a mix of freezing rain and snow now and a glaze on everything...

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY

1008 AM EST MON FEB 2 2015

.SYNOPSIS...

LOW PRESSURE PASSES SOUTH OF LONG ISLAND TODAY AND INTENSIFIES AS

IT TRACKS TOWARDS NOVA SCOTIA. HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS INTO THE

REGION BEHIND THE DEPARTING LOW. AN ARCTIC FRONT APPROACHES FROM

THE NORTHWEST WEDNESDAY...THEN CROSSES THE TRI-STATE WEDNESDAY

NIGHT AND THURSDAY MORNING. CANADIAN HIGH PRESSURE THEN BUILDS IN

THROUGH FRIDAY...AS LOW PRESSURE PASSES WELL TO THE SOUTHEAST. THE

HIGHS SLIDES TO THE SOUTH FRIDAY NIGHT. ANOTHER ARCTIC FRONT

APPROACHES FROM THE NORTH SATURDAY...THEN PUSHES TO THE SOUTH

SATURDAY NIGHT. LOW PRESSURE APPROACHES FROM THE WEST ON SUNDAY.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

...SIGNIFICANT ICING THROUGH THIS EVENING FROM THE NJ METRO AREA

EAST ACROSS NYC AND LONG ISLAND...

AS LOW PRES DEVELOPS FURTHER SOUTH ACROSS THE DELMARVA...THE COASTAL

FRONT CONTINUES MOVING SOUTH OF LONG ISLAND AND MOVES ACROSS THIS

BOUNDARY TOWARD THE GREATEST PRES FALLS...SOUTHEAST OF CAPE COD.

THIS ALLOWS COLDER AIR TO DRAIN SOUTH...THAT WILL CAUSE A ROUND OF

SIGNIFICANT FREEZING RAIN...1/4 TO 1/3 OF AN INCH MAINLY ACROSS

THE ADVISORY AREA.

MAJOR CHANGES WERE MADE TO REFLECT MUCH COLDER TEMPS ALONG THE

COAST...FALLING THROUGH THE 20S ALONG WITH INCREASING ICING. ROAD

CREWS SHOULD PREPARE FOR SIGNIFICANT ICING THROUGH THIS EVENING.

OTHERWISE...THE WINTER STORM WARNING...MAINLY FOR SNOW MIXED WITH

FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET EARLY...LOOKS ON TARGET.

Ok, Mt. Holly just issued the following - going to be an interesting day.  We now have about a 0.1" glaze on everything here in the Edison area and even paved surfaces are starting to freeze up.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

COLD AIR CONTINUES TO FILTER DOWN FROM THE NORTH WITHIN THE

NORTHEAST FLOW ON THE NORTHERN SIDE OF THE COLD STATIONARY

FRONTAL BOUNDARY ACROSS THE NORTHERN TIER. A WARM FRONT IS TRYING

TO SLOWLY LIFT INTO OUR SOUTHERN TIER, BUT WILL NOT MAKE MUCH MORE

PROGRESS NORTHWARD. THE COLD FRONT ACROSS WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA

WILL SWING THROUGH LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

THE ADVISORY FOR CHESTER COUNTY WAS ALLOWED TO EXPIRE AS

TEMPERATURES HAVE RISEN ABOVE FREEZING AND ALL RAIN SHOULD

CONTINUE UNTIL SNOW SQUALLS MOVE INTO THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON.

HOWEVER, THEY ARE NOT EXPECTED TO ADD MUCH ACCUMULATION.

THE ADVISORY WAS EXPANDED TO MONMOUTH COUNTY AS TEMPERATURES THERE

CONTINUE TO DROP AND WE EXPECT A PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN, ALONG

WITH SLEET AND/OR SNOW INTO THE AFTERNOON THERE NOW.

THE REST OF THE ADVISORIES/WARNINGS WERE EXTENDED UNTIL 6 PM AS

THE COLD AIR CONTINUES TO SAG SOUTHWARD WILL CHANGE RAIN BACK TO

FREEZING RAIN, AND WILL CONTINUE TO MIX WITH SLEET AND/OR SNOW AT

TIMES.

Rjay- sorry for kind of off topic but I am following your observations to make a decision if I should leave the city early and head back to island. I'm at the north end of seaford fairly close to you.

29.5 and freezing rain in North Merrick.

32.5 in Amityville (temp rose a little at work)

I'd appreciate if you could keep me updated on the conditions there. Debating if I should leave work from NYC early. Thinking the main roads should be fine, with ice accretion being confined mainly to trees/powerlines

definitely justified. Most of our secondary roads are flooded and even some of the main arteries are experiencing lane closures. very poor drainage to blame.

Reminds me of last year with all these events. Some are powder and others are just wet slop. Typical 40n winter this year..

Pretty funny that this is happening 4 years to the day of our last Ground Hog mixed mess. This could have really

been a contender for major pure snow had the block been more west based or the storm less amped.
