February 2015 General Discussion

So yesterday I bundled up and went hiking at Oakwood Metropark. It was cold, but that deep blue sky, deep, bright white glittery snow, & nature really felt like I was up north. Took some pics I will post later.

I always loved winter as a kid, but that winter doesn't exist anymore lol. Year after year we are getting winters far beyond what we should. First it was all about heavy snow, now the last two years hains been brutal cold added to the mix. If/when we ever DO revert back to normal winters, it will be a shock to the system. And I dont mean have like 5 snowy winters, 1 paltry winter, then 5 more snowy winters lol. I mean actually reverting back to normal :P

A couple models (gem, uk) are amping up the Wednesday clipper and tracking a good bit northeast of the nam and gfs.  The Euro is in between.  Tonight's ggem has 0.60" qpf in Cedar Rapids, the UK 0.40".  Both would be several inches of fluffy snow.  If it tracks farther sw we may only get an inch.

Update:  The 00z Euro is now on board the farther northeast, juiced-up track... now showing 0.40" here like the UK.

Yeah. This thing has sneaky written all over it.

Just trying to get caught up after spending a week in the hospital (was involved in a horrific wreck on I88).

Liking the look of the sneaky clipper tomorrow to give us a nice refresher.

I'm sorry to hear that, about the accident. Hope all is well now. :)

And yeah, hopefully the clipper maintains some more strength as it moves east.

I echo those thoughts, SchaumburgStormer.  I hope you are ok.

Another sign of the cold February:

1st February without a 28 degree temperature at Duluth
Every February, since weather records began at Duluth in 1875, has recorded a high temperature of at least 28 degrees for the entire month. February 2015 will probably not achieve this feat as the highest temperature so far this month is 27 degrees reported on the 9th.

Pretty impressive snow squall along the I-96 corridor in Michigan (30-35 DBZs on radar). It's hauling ass too.

I'm betting it either weakens before getting here or eases by just to my SW, but it definitely seems like pure bliss within the band...

I hope it holds together. It does look very impressive, like a little winter squall line.

Wow, glad you made it.  Scary times I'm sure.

Made it to 35 today.  Didn't lose much if any snow.

Thanks guys. Long recovery ahead, but just lucky to survive.

Radar trends look good for a fresh coating tonight here. Should be a nice little thump for Hawkeye

DVN has us down to -12 tomorrow night, and -10 Friday night now.  Both would be colder than the previous cold snaps.  Pretty impressive for almost March.

Snow depth was a crusty 5" or so before this new stuff started falling, so we'll have a deep base of snow which should maximize the cold the next few days.

hope you get well quickly. Was it weather related?

No, but the temps did play a part in my rescue. I was stopped in traffic, due to an accident a bit further up the road, when I was hit from behind by a semi at highway speed. Completely mangled my vehicle, necessitating a 45 minute extrication.

Unfortunately, the low temps caused my body temp to plummet during the extrication. So I was airlifted from the scene, and got to the hospital with a body temp of 96. So put me on the warmista wagon for the near future :)

Week long hospital stay with a surgery, and I am back home with a long recovery in front of me. Don't have much to do currently, so keep up the board chatter to keep me entertained.

as compared to last year, the lake ice is very thin and shifty and can change from day to day with winds. it doesn't take much to get a few streamers coming in.
