And then we go right back into the deep freeze. Prepare for a glacier!

LAF did hit -1˚ this morning, so chalk up another below zero temp...5th one of the winter. 14 more to go to match last season.;)

WAA should kick in overnight, but dropping like a rock there right now with a current temp of 3˚.

Yeah, dropped to -5 at my place. Only 1 at LAF.

Congrats LOT and other local WFO's....

Earlier this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recognized the efforts of NWS Chicago and other NWS offices covering Illinois and Indiana for their forecasting and warning efforts during the widespread tornado outbreak of November 17, 2013. Six offices, including ours, were presented a Bronze Medal.

While forecasting and warnings were essential on that day and always will be on dangerous weather days, the "final mile" of life-saving warnings is ...done by YOU. There were countless examples on that day of effective preparedness, sharing weather safety and warning information with family and friends, and appropriately responding when a warning was issued. For that, we very much thank you!

We do not ask for any celebration for this nice honor from NOAA, but we do ask to continue to spread the word on being Weather-Ready. For one, severe weather preparedness weeks for both Illinois and Indiana are just next month!

For more on the November 17, 2013 outbreak, which was one of the largest on record for the nation in November and for both Illinois and Indiana anytime of the year, please visit here: http://weather.gov/chicago/?n=13nov17

Hazy sun here this morning, currently 29F. Interestingly, temps at 850mb are projected to be around 16C this afternoon. If only that would mix down to the surface! That would be another wild piece in this non-winter we've had here.

Great pic Snowfreak!

Thanks. Its funny because I have been noticing sunsets many times the last month or so, usually you think of stunning sunsets as more of a summer thing (but when just right, winter can be the best).

It wasnt so much that the sunset itself was great  last night, it was that there was no sun all day! Then I see a pink sky

I have seen more awesome sunsets (IMBY) since last spring (through the summer/fall/and into winter) then I think I did in the last 10 years (if not more) combined.  Although "awesome" could vary per each person's special delight...but for mine, they have been just incredible.

About to take my son out of Island Lake State Park to ride around a bit... Should be easy to keep him warm with mid 30's outside.

Im the opposite. With my new job, my only time for day-time play is the weekend, so I had planned on going to a metropark today but its so nasty out I decided to wait til next weekend when it will be frigid and the snowpack will be frozen. The snow is deep but the air is mild and murky, I can feel the germs/flu/cold/etc in the air

My wife and I were talking about this the other day. We weren't sure if it was due to the fact we now live up north on a lake, or if the awesome sunsets were being seen all over. Glad everyone else is seeing them too. Seeing the pinks and oranges glow on the horizon makes you stop and appreciate the beauty. It's refreshing.

The last few days have had some great sunsets. Wish I would have had the right timing and location to get pictures of them. Maybe tonight there will be a good one.

Up to 67° in Rapid City now. Chinook in full force out there.

Torching here at 43° with mostly sunny skies. Snow has compacted down to 10-12" in non drifted areas.
