BullCityWx
Hopefully 12z GFS shows us the goods otherwise board meltdown in 3....2....1.... We've asked for winter all year long and we finally get it. People seem to forget we whiff on these events more than we make contact. No matter how this event unfolds tomorrow, we're headed into an extraordinarily wintery period.
shaggy
I don't mind super cold or super hot as long as I don't have to work in it No heat or AC at work for me. I work in a warehouse thats huge so they don't spend the money trying to keep it controlled. Winter time i'm wearing a pair of thermals a short sleeve shirt then a heavy long sleeve shirt and sometimes 2 coats along with two pair of pants. Summer time it has been as hot as 94 degrees at my work station so its unbearable.
CherokeeGA
CSRA forecasters now calling for Monday night wintry mix/Tuesday rain/Tues night wintry mix again... KCAE AFD calls for wet bulb temps above freezing in AGS. This low ought to make up its mind. I'm getting nervous, don't want last year redux here. If the models are getting this wrong, a lot of N GA folks could be in for a shock :/ I'm not sure that anyone in GA could legitimately complain they didn't get notice of potential weather on Monday/Tuesday. FFC issued a watch yesterday. I mean, as of now the models largely have most everything north of ATL, right? But when I got up this morning, I noticed FFC kept the Watch (although they acknowledge the northerly shifts in wintry precip in the discussion, how many regular joes read that). At this point even if it falls as rain they seem mostly to be concerned about black ice forming in the early AM. So anyone who is aware that there is a Watch should not be shocked if there is wintry precipitation. This time last year for the daytime storm that caught everyone flatfooted, nothing was being talked about seriously in the days before and IIRC, there were not watches being trumpeted 48 hours prior to the event, either. I think FFC only got serious about Warning it at 3am before it started at 10am which was too late. A lot of people are too busy in the morning getting out the door for a leisurely stroll through the weather forecast. Winter weather Warnings really need to happen the afternoon before, when news has a chance to spread. Cobb County schools have already decided to close on Monday. (I'm not sure they should have, but since it's been a bland winter, they certainly have the days banked to use, so might as well use them. It's almost March already.) Cherokee County was already closed this whole week for Winter Break. Not sure if any other NGa counties are on 10 month calendars with a break this week. And also, tomorrow is President's Day and therefore a holiday for some workers. So even if we do get more precip than the models indicate, I don't imagine we'd see another debacle on the roads like last year.

Looks like another potential wintry event next weekend.

AJF0602
I feel for any pro mets who are in the grasps of this storm, definitely a tough one to forecast with all of the constant changes.

sparklecity
I might be crazy but I like ice storms ever since I went through one when I was younger. It sounded like a war zone outside with the constant sound of limbs and trees falling plus the bright flashes and booms of transformers exploding. I got my 4 season sleeping bag, wood for the fireplace, and gas stove ready to go. Only thing that really bothers me is not having hot water. I'll still have internet on my phone too unlike last time Hope the cell phone towers don't get taken out! If that happens I may change my mind! sparklecity
GFSSSSSSS. Model Madness. Touche GFS! Man if those 850's could just be a little more south and hold on just a little longer, the upstate could have been good on that run. Et Tu Euro? featherwx
Just a quick question: when people refer to the I-85 corridor on this forum, how far west/east are you implying? I live about a mile on either side of 85 at both my parents' houses in Durham and Orange counties, so I don't know if I should get excited when people say "crush job for I-85!" I have a feeling that some posters think of the "I-85 corridor" as meaning the triad and not more central parts of the piedmont, so it would be helpful to clarify this. AirNelson39
Not really.....a lot of us would like to see it further south He didn't say beautiful for everyone, he was obviously referencing for his area...I think it looks beautiful as well. I hate it's not trended well for some but for some it's trended much better

jshetley
It does look like it may be trying to trend back to the south. Hopefully we can get snow, or at least sleet with this though. 1/2-3/4 of ice would be no fun at all. And that is what a map I saw from WSPA-TV had for the heart of the upstate. rduwx
As weather enthusiast we always pull for extremes. Well we could be looking at one of those extremes here in central NC. Although I would rather have a snow event, this could possibly be a ice event we talk about for many years down the road. Looks like I'll be checking the generator today and filling up the gas tanks. mackerel_sky
The Dec 2002 mega ice storm, was slated to be all zrn, but we ended up having a lot of sleet mixed in, and made the crust on the roads crazy If we get an inch of snow, then crust on top, it may be on the ground all week, based on temps after the storm

My youngest daughter had just been born in July and it was brutal trying to keep everyone warm. I remember heating up bottles in the fireplace. We ended up going to Home Depot just to get warm when we found out people were waiting on a truck full of generators. Well we ended up buying a generator that night. NC_WX10
I'm guessing for folks north of I-40 we should get a solid 3-5 before changing over to sleet than freezing rain?

Jonathan
Wonder what the odds are of the 0c 850 line setting up on the VA/NC border? Looks like the GFS kept me all snow for the duration. No low transfer. NAM/RGEM switch me to sleet (I hope) at the end. With a low transfer. Looks like I'll be hugging the GFS inside of 36 hours! :lmao:

jburns
I just want my average 2" of snowfall. Is that too much to ask ? Especially in a winter with lots of cold air around ? Be careful what you wish for. If it started snowing, you'd have to move further south.
