Looking at how the first two months of winter turned out you just have to shake your head looking at how Jan and Dec-Jan 5h maps turned out.  If you would have showed me this in November and told me this is what Dec-Jan would have looked like I would have laughed thinking there was just no way it would be that bad.  But, when you compare it with 05 it looks identical, only difference was in 05 we had plenty of minor events, yet RDU still had less than 1" of snow.  So this winter is a worse version of 05.

One more thing, BOS was 200+% of climo in 05.

This winter reminds me in a lot of ways of the winter of 2012/13.....pretty crappy winter outside of a freak 3 inch snow. I think we'll just have to hope for a sneaky little surprise. Seems this year we can't even buy an ULL. On a side note Phil saw his shadow so we'll have six more weeks of cold rain! Ha all that said I have a hard time buying we get totally blanked.

Alright, the numbers are in.  GSO ended -0.6 degrees below normal for the month of January with not a single sticking flake of snow to show for it.  What a joke.  Absolutely pathetic.  It's a tough task to manage a below normal month in prime climo without being able to see a single flake of snow or sleet pellet stick to the ground, but we've managed the improbable.

EDIT: Not just without a sticking flake, but I didn't see any flakes of snow fall at all!  A tad bit of freezing drizzle that was pathetic and didn't even wet anything and a 45-degree sleetstorm is all we have to show for this month.

RDU was -1.2 below normal...

Nc really has been in a rut for a long while. I mean you used to could just about count on a big storm or two in nc while we got rain here every winter but that hasn't been the case for a while...a lot longer than I would have ever guessed back in the day.

All i know is I'm happy I got to see some light snow back on november 1 and those flurries a few weeks back. Sure looks like there is a good bet that's all I'll see this winter. Pretty incredible that the only real snow I see all winter happened one day after freaking halloween. The only hope I have is we luck up with what seems like an endless parade of coastal lows.

And on another sad note, we face the possibility of yet another year without a classical cad/ice/winter event.  It's really incredible how long it's been since we have had a classic ice/CAD storm. It's even more incredible really that not even north carolina has not had much because it really doesn't take much damming at all for north carolina to get ice/snow (where has here it's much harder and things sort of have to be perfect).  If i was you, i'd still be optimistic though for that reason...odds at this point certainly would argue north carolina is over due.  Down here though, that's not the case. it's just so much harder and  there is nothing in the foreseeable future that looks even remotely promising.

I've joked around the last few years about them being an endangered or extinct species but I'm starting to think that's actually the case :axe:

Hahaha! I was just watching TWC and they have Jim Cantore live in the snowstorm. They showed a clip of him in 2011 when he was reporting live in the thundersnow. He was recalling it and he said it was like a big weather porn party. They were all sitting there with their mouths open and couldn't believe he just said that. Haha! Awesome!

Unbelievable that we can't get into at least a one week or two week pattern that's favorable for snow. Ug.

Just looking back at past winters, this is the worse winter since the 90's.  I guess 06/12 was bad too but those winters were warm/dry relative so it was tolerable.  Plus, 12 sucked for everyone.  01 was probably as bad as this winter but we kind of had that coming after 2000 and then things were great 02-04.  This feels like a 90's winter where there was virtually no shot of anything wintery.  I still can't believe we are going on 3 of 4 winters so bad and 7 of 11, I have to look at the RDU snow graph I posted to remind myself that we are on the tail end of our terrible 30 year snow futility cycle.  Oh well, the woah as me continues for another year

It's really not safe to spend a lot of time on the internet and then go on live TV.

540 line is just a touch north I'd say.

edit: I just actually took a look at it, that's some impressive CAD. I can't help but think temps would be really marginal but who knows.

yeah, kinda pointless to look at temps this far out.  total fantasy land.

But look at this crap.   I stole it form the PBP thread
