So far in my new location I was at 114% of DCA's total last season and am at exactly the same so far this season...DCA's 30 year running average (not some smoothed norm) is 15.1" and their median is 11.6" so I figure my average is 17" and my median 13". There are places in NW DC over 300' that average at least 20".  The new map is probably pretty data starved.

I assume they only are using major sites and coops.. not many places have an official 30 yr avg probably.

That would be silly. And I don't think anyone is having a meltdown about the snowfall measurements.

If there are two people reporting that are very close to each other and they have notable differences, they very much deserve the hairy eyeball looking at them

Problem with coops is people measure when they feel like it.   You're probably at 19-20" where you are.  I was at 19" in MTP, and your elevation is roughly the same, but for some reason I think you do a smidge better on that side of the zoo.

I'm not sure people do it with bad intentions. I'm sure I've reported a bad measurement or three, but it wouldn't have been done with the intention of 'coming out on top'. Some folks measure in the grass, round differently than others, etc. At the end of the day, I think most of us know our local climo and are pretty comfortable with it. Maybe I'm giving people too much credit.

LOL, measure in the grass.  Anybody who does that is cheating intentionally.

I still think all snowfall measurements should come with a ruler, a wide angle photo so that everyone can see where you're measuring.  It ain't too difficult to take and post a picture these days.  I'll do it for every snow and every measure.  Wonder how many will join me in doing that?

Part of it is lack of education. For as much as weathercasters harp on total inanity eslewhere they generally never tell people how to measure snow. But it does seem to become a 'contest' at times.. like if someone has an inflated total near them they're likely to report something close even if they got it in one of 10 spots and the others were less. At least IMO watching things over time.

The ruler thing is actually somewhat helpful. I definitely focused more on those than random reports when watching CWG this weekend. A good number of people sending in pics that clearly had snow in them prior to the event and acting like it was all new.

Yep, sorta like the COOP up the road from me. A new snow total of 0.8 on 1.65 liquid and a increase from 6 inches to 11 of what is on the ground from day before from this weekends storm..........

I sigh loudly every time someone says "eyeballing...." or whatever.

no offense to that persons eyeballs, but no way you can accurately measure snow by not actually measuring it.

Yeah.. I think it might work OK if you are a long-timer and it's like 1-3" but past that not so much.

But agree.  "eyeballing" is an immediate red flag that tells me the person has no intention of going out to accurately measure

meh -- i know that sparky and highstakes both at some point during events will say "eyeballing", but then give a measurement later. I can only assume they go out and actually measure. I just dont take the "eyeballing" part seriously.

Everyone measures differently -- i try to measure every hour. clear every six. saturday was a pain as my snow board spot was definitely being impacted by wind, so had to abandon that and measure on the driveway. even measuring on the driveway, i measured in three to four spots. away from the cars.

i may be slightly OCD though.

I don't think that is OCD. To truly get a feel, I think you have to look at a number of non-grass spots. I was thrilled to actually be home during the event with time to measure on the hour while the heaviest snow was falling. I measure in four to five spots, cleared sidewalk, board, flat raised stone railing, to get to mine. I inevitably, going to back to '09/'10 seem to come in under measurements around me doing it that way, but I am confident in my numbers for this exercise. And maybe the slightly lower totals than areas a few miles away is explainable to the mini-heat island I am in, in my particular neighborhood.

Are you guys getting the feeling that I am, that starting next week, winter is over for everyone outside of New England? I think even southern New England may be done as well too

Yes, meteorological spring begins in one week. Sadly nature may not listen well.

Yes, I always do real measurements at some point(s) even though I might eyeball in the interim not wanting to put shoes on etc. at that point in time.....  I never measure in grass except for those relatively rare occasions when it is only sticking to grassy, bushy surfaces so you have to make for an allowance for that happening now and then.....always cut conservatively if I do have to resort to a grassy knoll.

I don't get this.. I wasn't even really talking about the storm with that comment. Every other post I made was not bearish on the event. I guess I'm a big deal since I have trolls now.

Why are you so sensitive? The other night I posted something similar in a non-trolling way in an attempt to appreciate how far we came with the storm.

Your response to me was to "f**k off." I'm not sure why you would want to say that to someone. Here's what I am sure of...I wish I could buy you for what you're worth, then sell you for what you think you're worth. I'd make a nice profit.

Anyway, the next weather event meeting or GTG we are both attending, I will afford you the opportunity to tell me to "f**k off" then....

You've gone after me more than once with no provocation. What else was I supposed to see it as?  I don't cause trouble with you just for fun do I?

Again you're being a jerk here. I don't know what you want me to say. No doubt you could kick my ass.. I'm pretty scrawny. And I actually think I'm not worth too much lol. So... yeah.

Intellectually u are boss and I'm still upset about you losing your moderator title. This is just petty conflict that has no place in the banter thread.

I'm a bit rude here sometimes--don't deny that--but I don't go out of my way to give anyone grief. ACFD is one of a handful of people who continue to have a problem with me that I've tried to mostly sidestep. When I get 'attacked' I will attack back. Why he chose a comment I made on the first page of a threat titled WTF to make a point is still unknown. Him acting like it was just for fun is shady.. might as well come out and be honest... one thing you can hand to me is I'm honest here. Otherwise, I don't care to be thought of as important.. part of the reason I gave up the admin title here since I wasn't really doing anything to help the board anymore. I'm basically one of you all who happened to meet the right people a while back and has spent way too much of life looking at weather models and the boards.
