My average is 18-20...pretty much in line with BWI. I'd think that you'd average more than 2-4" more than me. It was a pretty noticeable difference last year. I had 46.5" and I believe you had just over 60". BWI was about 39.5" or so.

Sorry?  (Not sorry...) ;)  Yeah, LWX climo map has Columbia as 22", which I think is reasonable.  I don't fully trust that map, but I think it's reasonable in HoCo at least.

Thanks.  Makes sense.  You seem to have been in a "screw zone" for a lot of storms the last couple winters, but then again, you know how to measure so maybe it just seemed that way versus all the grass slant-stickers in our forum.

I actually can't complain much about the prior two winters.  I did pretty good in March '13 when everyone else east of me was getting the shaft.  This year has been a bit of a bummer though.

IAD's median 1981-10 is 17.4" and Vienna's is 16.7", so I guess I'm approaching median.  Still, with a super-cold Feb I would have wanted to at least break 10" on the month.

Out of curiosity, which parts of that climo map do you disagree with?

Hadn't seen that newer map that MN just posted, but I thought the contours were too far north in Harford county (where I grew up) on the old map.  Don't like that new map's weird zone of lower snow in much of HoCo, northern PG and eastern MoCo.  Splitting hairs though I guess.

Agree, the 17" and 15" north of DC look suspect.

A bit more info to throw into the mix. Here's the PA annual snowfall map 1981-2010. Based on living in State College for a few years and living in Southern York Co. for 10 years, I'd say this looks accurate. I'd imagine the other side of the boundary in northern MD would be very similar to what you see in Southern York and Adams Counties.

Nope, I wouldn't make that assumption.  I kinda think a lot of those numbers are low in S PA....I have 21 years of snow records which average 34.7" over the period.

Some of those southern PA numbers might be low... I know for a fact that Lancaster does not average 18" of snow, it makes no sense to be so low. Millersville is a few miles southwest, 300' elevation, and has 85 years of snowfall records. Long term average is 27", while the last 30 years is 28".

It is probably based on CO-OP data which is often incomplete and who knows what else, and then smoothed over...some of it makes little sense...I think I actually like the old map better though it is inflated in a few places

It's also deflated in a few places... Warrior Bigfoot almost certainly averages more than 13", probably more like 18" or so.

In my area it looks just about right, but it's a sharp gradient from Baltimore to the M/D line.

There are bound to be some inaccuracies in the data across an entire State. Some people can't measure if their life depended on it. And some just always want to have the highest amounts. 10 years of living in Stewartstown in Southern York Co. tells me that 29 along the York/Bmore Co. boundary looks pretty good.

I'm not sure people do it with bad intentions. I'm sure I've reported a bad measurement or three, but it wouldn't have been done with the intention of 'coming out on top'. Some folks measure in the grass, round differently than others, etc. At the end of the day, I think most of us know our local climo and are pretty comfortable with it. Maybe I'm giving people too much credit.

Heavy automation probably. People like to lie about snow for some reason.
