is there a met fight happening in the storm thread?  did ers challenge chris 87 to a duel?  Come on red taggers, don't be like us.

yeah he challenged me (i'm sure in a half joking way) -- i should had made it clear when I said we should hash it out offline, that I meant I'd send him some papers to read about recent improvements to nwp/da and observational impact studies

i can come across as snarky -- unfortunately i work in a field full of snark, you defend your work or perish (somewhat joking) -- and I don't work for a national center, i'm a research scientist at UMD (but i spend some of my effort as a visiting scientist at NESDIS and I oversee a research group that sits in the new NOAA building)

Total banter and not to be taken seriously, but just going by memory, thinking ahead to the possibilities for the next ten days reminds me of February 1979 when the area fell into an ice-box for a couple of weeks and couldn't buy a snow storm.  And then, of course, we got hit by PDI.

Who knows?  Maybe Tuesday/Wednesday goes wide right but then we get our share next weekend.  If someone could make that happen, I'd also take the switch to spring temperatures immediately after the '79 blizzard, please.

That's not true.  There were two storms leading up to PD1, one of them an over-performing clipper/miller B type, that dropped about a foot of snow prior to PD1.   I lived in Baltimore then.....Then PD1 happened and there was snow on top of the old snow so it got really deep.

I am beginning to think that some meteorologists have more ego than Athletes, Politicians and Hollywood celebrities combined.  Please do not take any offense to my comments.

just scientists in general unfortunately -- go to a major science-based conference (AMS/AGU) and it's a week long pissing match -- I believe it stems mainly from the competitive nature of graduate school, everyone is always measuring themselves, everyone was the smartest from where they came from and now they're dealing with the inevitable fact that they are average on the next level

This is very true. My comments were made half joking but they do do prove to be somewhat true. My wife's best friend sister is a top scientist in Baltimore and when we get together I can't even have a reasonable conversation with her or her colleagues.

it's a competitive field -- lots of scientists competing for a finite number of research dollars  -- everyone measuring themselves against others in terms of publication metrics -- mixed that in with a bunch of know-it-alls and it can be a tough thing to be around for an extended period of time (or a career)

Yesterday, I posted in here asking if anyone else is excited about the snow tonight. I would hope more posters than me who were able to experience an exciting event tonight are still smiling in the after-glow. It was and still is a completely unusual winter weather event for my location--- 2"+ of snow/50+ mph gusts/near zero visiblility/drifting snow over major roads hours later/plunging temps and wind gusts ramping up to over 50 mph.

Tonight has surpassed the last great Valentine's Day weather event I spent with my very patient SO--- 2/14/07 right after the sleet-storm.

I was jacked up for this the last few days, and it produced more than I imagined. Yes, I keep my bar very low, but it is about damn time we see some real snow fall from the sky and do it with gusto. That was about as good as any SNE blizzard I've been through.

Decent NAM and good GFS runs are just the cherry on top.

This storm was the sh&*. I enjoyed every minute of it. I was able to be outside the whole storm. I'm just glad I don't have to look at frozen mud for the blast. It can be as cold as it want now. As long as I have snow to look at.

HOLY CR^/!The wind is going nuts! Awesome!!!!! Jebwalk time.

My warm fuzzy feeling is a bottle of Boordy Riesling

Boordy?  Nice.

My gf and I went to a Far Eastern Shore Wine tasting this afternoon. They are out of Easton.  They import their grapes, but don't let that deter you.  If you see it locally, give it a try.  The Autumn and Dragonfly are particularly good. It's almost a light alcoholic fruit juice, but so good!
